Bickford plays the despicable cattle king exceptionally well. Crawford is as good in the alcoholic sheriff role. The flashback treatment is the best way to tell this story. John Ford would use the "this is the way it really happened" flashback technique later with "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." This is really an above average western.

I almost didn't watch this movie, because I really have never cared for Broderick Crawford!! Seeing him in Highway Patrol w/his difficult to understand 90-MPH mumbled/jumbled dialogue was a turn off!! But after skipping this several times, I finally decided to give it a look. I'm glad I did; this is a REALLY GOOD movie!! John Derek & Henry Hull were extremely well-cast!! I was amused that at the start of this movie, Crawford was given about as much respect as I had afforded him. But as it progressed, all that changed. The ending was a surprise!!

I usually don't like the posse Western movies, but this was a good one. I tend not to like movies that take place with only one background. This posse movie was an exception, they mixed up the settings, and made it more interesting. Thanks for posting.
