Awful Arthur’s use to have all you can eat lobster back in the 90’s when I lived in Manteo. They would pack that place because if I’m not mistaken it was $19.99 a person. Still a good deal. They made the money on drinks. I never worked at Awful’s but I did work at Owens Restaurant and Clara’s Seafood Grill (since closed to go work with her family at Owens) on the Manteo waterfront. All of the fish still has to be government inspected so it’s not as fresh as they claim. There was a restaurant on Hatteras island called the Froggy Dog (Rodanthe) that actually DID sell seafood that was literally swimming in the water earlier that day. A family came in and 2 men in the group ordered their “fresh” tuna. One guy couldn’t eat all of his because it didn’t taste quite right while the other man ate all of his plus the rest of the other guys. A couple of days later the guy that ate all of the tuna died and NC state government officials were able to trace it down to bad tuna. The restaurant was sued by the family and they eventually closed. Some of The local outer banks restaurants would sell fish that was off of the docks but because of that death fewer and fewer did. Restaurant owners don’t want to loose their livelihood.
