The Waco Siege was one of the most controversial law enforcement events in American History. The Siege began in early 1993, when a government raid on a compound in Waco, Texas, led to a 51-day standoff between federal agents and members of a millennial Christian sect called the Branch Davidians. The siege ended dramatically on April 19, 1993.

Please do a video on the Battle of Athens (1946). Fed up WW2 vets taking back their town from corrupt local law enforcement and politicians who rig elections and intimidate the citizenry. An epic story that would surely go viral.

I'm a retired cop, and I remember learning in the academy; when you have them contained, time is on your side. There was absolutely no excuse for any of this and to learn the ATF foiled their own raid just to insure media coverage makes it that much worse. I'm offended everytime I see an ATF 'special' agent wearing a vest that says "POLICE".

When this happened, my dad was in the uscg stationed at the headquarters in DC. I always remember what he said about this incident. "I was on watch in the coms room when I saw the news and the raid was live. I thought it was some low budget movie at first then realized it was real. The ATF should have arrested him in town. Instead they had their taticool equipment and thought they were operators and got their nuts handed to them." Dad pretty much sumed up the raid there.
  • The part that burns my ass more than anything are the photos of FBI guys posing like big game hunters over smoldering human remains. That was inexcusable.

the "drop in auto sears" were actually a bump fire attachment called a hellfire trigger which the atf one day decided could be auto sears. later they decided they didnt meet the definition of machine gun.

David Koresh was walking around Waco, going to Wal-Mart, etc. before the ATF decided to arrest him at the compound. There is no reason why the ATF couldn't just arrest him when he was out of the compound. There did not have to be a standoff.

"And regardless of the psychologies or theologies on either side, both sides put their quarter in the jukebox," is such a raw line. Thank you.
  • @mjgasiecki
I understand Koresh may (probably) was doing some sketchy stuff but the government reaction was ridiculous…they did a great job of making the situation worse.

The interview with the lead negotiator (who wrote a book on it and iirc has a netflix special about himself) is pretty damning. The ATF/FBI learned absolutely fucking nothing from ruby ridge and were either criminally incompetent or trying to find a way to justify killing as many of them as possible. Both are equally fucked right after ruby ridge.

such a strong quote. here’s one more, “A true warrior fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him” -G.K. Chesterton
  • You don't mention that the local sheriff investigated all the claims and found they they possessed hellfire triggers which were legal at the time and they had paid for the permits they needed for all their firearms. The sheriff also showed up to the siege to protest what the government was doing and they forced him off the property and never let him back in.

This took place about a year after Ruby Ridge, the ATF learned nothing from RR. I remember watching both "raids" on TV when I was a teenager
  • @dewoitine
Fun fact: David Koresh was willing to let agents into the ranch to search it peacefully before the raid. The ATF declined...
  • @Modine.
A couple of things: 1)the branch davidian compound wasn't even in Waco, it's actually six miles east of Waco city limits. 2) There were so many reporters camped out along side the road they went so far as to call themselves reporter city (or something to that affect) and eaven appointed a mayor.
  • Why is the ATF so inept in every thing they do? Do they ever get a mission right? Do they ever do anything with alcohol and tobacco? Why do they seem so redundant? These are the questions that keep me up at night.
  • @desertfox7846
"you can't play god, without creating hell" is such an unnecessarily good line, excellent minidoc too!
  • @j.settle6448
Anyone that defends the ATF's actions on this debacle needs mental help! No matter what things the Branch Davidians did, this was NOT the proper response.
  • @motorTranz
Hopefully this tragedy is studied on what not to do. My condolences to the families who lost loved ones in this horror. Thank you for showing us this story.
