NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice. The speaker makes strong assertions about a specific diet that lack sufficient scientific evidence for general prescription. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelin…

According to the Global Burden of Disease study (the largest study of disease risk factors in history; funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) the #1 cause of both death and disability in the United States is our diet. Cigarettes now only kill about a half million Americans every year, whereas our diet appears to kill hundreds of thousands more. The good news is that means we have tremendous power over our health destiny and longevity. Healthy eating has the potential to not only prevent, but reverse some of our leading causes of death including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Why, then, is nutrition not the #1 thing taught in medical school? American physician, author, and speaker on public health issues, particularly the benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet and the harms of eating animal products. He is a vegan and the creator of NutritionFacts.org. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. "I don't mind dying. I just don't want it to be my own fault". Wow. What a great statement!
  • @MegaLiebchen
After watching this video 1 year ago I went overnight plant-based. Have not been sick since then! I am so happy Dr. Greger exists.

Hey, Greger! Wherever you are, my heartfelt and humble gratitude for having saved my life, Dude!

My son will graduate from med school in May. I am very happy to say He is heavily influenced by Dr. Greger. Would like to shake this mans hand some day.

I just adore this guy. Not only because with his dedication and work he's saving millions of lives, but because he's an all-around beautiful human being. Compassionate, and truthful. We could use a lot more of his type in this world. Thank You, Dr. Greger.
  • @Vegelicious71
Awesome that he got on a TED Talk. Let's hope many people view this one. His book "How Not to Die" is eye-opening and based on solid scientific research.

My professor assigned this video for extra credit work in my speech class and I didn't expect to watch the whole video. My expectations were wrong and now I'm a big fan. Thanks professor and Dr. Greger!

Excellent presentation. The facts are conclusive. We need to learn with history: In a few years we will be disgusted by the food industry manipulative tactics like we are today by the 1950's tobacco industry tactics. People have the power to change right way what are they eating and to make politicians pass laws that prohibits misguided manipulative adverts. We must demand scientific accurate nutrition classes for medical staff as they are the providers of a service that deals directly with our lives and deaths! What is more important than our health?!..

Incredibly compelling and his book is a life-changing work that I'd love to see recommended for all teachers, nutritionists and doctors.
  • This man is just brilliant. I'm haunted by a response I received from my Oncologist in 2014 when I was diagnosed with cancer. I just knew in my bones that diet was part of the answer for cure/prevention. I started to talk about nutrition and the response was, "Nothing you ate caused this. You just won the world's worst lottery." To their credit it was indeed a rare cancer, but it's back, and (once again) I wish I had listened to that divine voice trying to save me. Thank God this time He's sent an Angel/Doctor to help me save my life!; especially since my employer made it impossible for me to properly take care of myself last time. No job is more important than your health. If you can, once you know that your health and happiness is not a priority to your employer, move on!

As a professor I have studied and shared the absolute lunacy of all of those old tobacco ads and shared them with my student. I published research regarding smoking activity in today's elementary schools. Dr. Greger DID present evidence of actual vetted studies in his presentation, but just like in today's world people don't want to believe the science. My husband became a vegan five years ago at 330 pounds. Within two years he had lost 115 pounds and is doing very well at 70 years old. Thanks Dr. Greger for the reminder.
  • @VegeCooking
I've been whole foods, plant-based for over thirteen years. My bloodwork is now stellar, at 45 I have enough energy to keep up with my insanely active teen, and sleep like a baby. So grateful to have found this lifestyle for health, for animals, and for the planet.
  • @dddux
I have nothing but praise for Dr. Greger. He is the leading expert on nutrition nowadays. Within years from now, people will talk about unhealthy food in the same way they are talking about smoking. Actually it's happening already and more and more people each day are more and properly informed about the fabulous benefits of a plant based healthy diet. Now gimme those beets and chard, spinach, kale, carrots, cabbage, apples, oranges, beans, nuts, oats etc.!

I just adore this man. He is funny and so right on! I smile every time I see his email has arrived. My father had terrible "calcification" in his heart---he had no idea. He has eaten vegan/plant based/no oil now for 13 years. He is the picture of health and has reduced the plaque in his heart. Thanks to the work of Esselstyn and Greger!
  • @VeganChefRon
One of my favorite people on earth. So grateful to you for the work you do Dr. Greger and for you being you.
  • @user-mc8tg5sh8n
I am so proud of the humanity, because there are some kind, clever and compassionate people like doctor Michael Greger. These people are working not just for money. God bless them!
  • Excellent presentation! I get so frustrated now when my own family refuse to listen to this life-saving information, which is based on solid science. The system is killing for profit and shows no desire to slow down. Why would they do stop if there is nothing with capacity to face their immense power? A Huge Hug From Brazil Doctor Michael Greger!
