Every time I hear about what some of these guys went through, I get embarrassed for bitching about some of the things I find "unbearable."

Thank you Mark my grandfather didn't talk about this much but we are all so proud of him ❤ I was lucky enough to have time with him I've never known a man as strong in mind and body rip grandad xxx
  • This has to be one of the most astonishing stories of individual valour, duty and heroic determination I have ever been made aware of. It should be made into a very long and gripping film. Thank you for putting this out there.

One minor correction - HMAS Perth was a light cruiser, formerly HMS Amphion of the Leander class. My grandfather served on her and ended up in camps including Moulmein. He made it back. Thank you for this utterly engrossing story of courage.

Thank you for helping to keep these stories alive. We are deeply indebted to that generation for the freedoms and liberties that are now taken for granted.

Mark, you're too good for this world. I thought the main channel was already ridiculously impressive (both in quantity and quality), and now you've added this? This is great!
  • You're a wonderful asset of England and to all who love history of WWII. Thank you for your wonderful videos and audio books.
  • Dr. Felton, you do a splendid job bringing up subjects that were never discussed before. Thank you for the fascinating and informative videos!
  • My favourite uncle was a Captain in one of the Burma deployed, Punjabi, Indian Army rifle regiments. He lived until the 1990s but was never reconciled himself to the Japanese people. He wouldn't speak of them, wouldn't allow anything Japanese into his home. And, that was just on the basis of having fought Gen. Mutaguchi's 15th Army at Kohima. He wasn't in fact captured - just doing battle with the enemy was enough for hate.

A teacher of mine hated the Japanese although it was 30 years after the war and he would not buy anything made in Japan. Eventually he told a few of us why. He had been in the RAF in the far east as transport aircraft crew and at the end of the war had been detailed to evacuate ex POW's. He told us of the terrible condition they were in and how when they died during the flight he and his other crewmen had to "bury them" by pushing the bodies out. I will never forget this story and the image it conjours up, this poor man was scarred for life by his terrible experience.
