Ships Sunk By The Battleship Massachusetts During The Battle Of Casablanca. While most sources only mention the hits that the Massachusetts made on the incomplete battleship Jean Bart, they don't mention the other ships that where sunk in the harbour of Casablanca. In this video all the ships are mentioned that the battleship Massachusetts (BB-59) sank with or without other ships and/or planes during the Battle Of Casablanca. Pictures used in this video are of the actual ships that took part, except for the submarine Meduse.

Many years ago, I worked for a gentleman who was a cook on the USS Massachusetts. He opened a small diner in East Providence, Rhode Island which operated from 1954 until about 1998,or so, when he passed away. He decided to use a local Indian name, and called it the Wampanoag Diner. It was a popular landmark in our town for many years. All the food prepared was in the US Navy style, which is why people came back all the time. Anyway, I remember him telling me stories about the attack in Casablanca and the encounter with the French battleship. This man went on to serve in the Pacific right through to the end of the war in 1945. In fact, if you go visit the battleship Massachusetts, (Which today is docked in Fall River Massachusetts,) his name is listed among all the crew whoever served on that ship.I'm glad I got to hear his stories as a younger man.

Capt: You see all those French ships? Crew: Yes sir! Orders? Capt: I dont want to see them anymore.
  • Note: If your ship is struck by “a sixteen inch shell from the Battleship Massachusetts” it will most likely be sinking or beaching soon.
  • The French Battleship Jean Bart was refloated and repaired after the war and served with the French Navy.

For those wondering, it's the vichy french navy, not the free french

I knew about the Jean Bart of course, but didn't know about the other ships Massachusetts had damaged or destroyed during this fight. Thank you for publishing your research. Most US battleships went through their entire service lives without the opportunity to engage in a surface action.

Despite the low sound level, I really enjoyed your video. This made the Battleship Massachusetts one of the few battleships in WWII to engage in ship to ship combat. She certainly did an incredible job! Very well done! Please keep the outstanding videos coming and God bless you, my friend!
  • This may be slightly off topic but.. my dad has told the story of when he was in Vietnam, the battleship New Jersey was firing shells from out in the ocean, over their heads, at enemy positions. If I remember correctly, he described them sounding like a train when they went overhead.. I can imagine they were praying there were no short rounds

Sound level is so low that I can’t share with people or recommend it. Wish you’d redo it. Came from Massachusetts and have visited the battleship.

While I was watching this a 16inch shell fired by the Massachussetts hit my neighbors car, and it sank to the bottom of the harbor.

At 2:03 in the video, it talks about one of the spotter planes being attacked. My grandfather was the radioman in that spotter plane. He radioed in the famous "Batter up" signal and then he and his pilot were shot down, crashed landed, and taken prisoner.

I got most of this, but I missed: 1.) What the name of the battleship was; and, 2.) what size shells it fired.
  • I love the time breakdowns. Paints a better picture for the theater of the Mind.

French cruise ships sunk by 16 inch shells fired by the USS Massachusetts: "Hey, we're floatin' here!!"
  • @bkcamaro
Massachusetts - “ if it floats it dies” haha
  • @Ryenobal
The Jean Bart might have been the toughest stationary warship to neutralize in the entire war..
  • @redenginner
I’m wondering how many of the ships kills in that battle where just shells that missed and hit something else.

People like to drool all over the USS Missouri, the most overrated battleship of all time. In my book, the USS Massachusetts is the coolest American battleship ever built. She did something an Iowa class battleship could never even dream of, sinking an enemy battleship. She took actual damage from the French battleship, as the two ships exchanged fire. She sank 3 troop transports/ocean liners, one cargo ship, two destroyers, one destroyer leader, and one cruiser. She is the closest thing we have to a US equivalent to the Warspite
