You like Bill Withers? His earlier work was a bit too soul for my taste, but I've been a huge fan since his collaboration on Grover Washington Jr's 1980 album Winelight. I think Just the Two of Us is his undisputed masterpiece. This smooth, jazzy piece expresses a deep connection between a couple: whatever happens, they can get through it together. Listen to the brilliant ensemble of Washington's warm saxophone, Tee's sparkling Fender Rhodes and Wither's dulcet tone; you can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. The heartfelt, plainspoken and thoughtful lyrics make it one of the most moving songs of the 1980s. It's an epic meditation on confidence and commitment.
