Why is Archen a fossil pokemon? Why is Archeps a fossil pokemon?
What is Archen based on? What is Archeops based on? What is carracosta based on? What are archen and archeops based on? what fossil pokemon are in black and white?

We used a number of paleontology illustrations and gave credit when credit was applicable and findable. If we missed yours, shoot me an email and we'll get it all sorted. My business email is on our channel's 'About' page.

Some of those ancient turtles were the size of a mattress! Big thanks again to Helix for sponsoring! Visit helixsleep.com/lockstin to get up to $200 off your Helix mattress, plus two free pillows!

Tortuga is one of my favorite Pokémon and when I checked my old black copy I lost my marbles looking for him. Scared I lost him to home but then I found him in the daycare lol. Love you Finn.

"Ancient Wing" sounds like what would've been Archeops' signature move, if they were giving every Pokémon a signature move back then.
  • I'm surprised the navy/pirate angle wasn't mentioned for the turtles, especially given that the islands of Tortuga and Costa Rica were so important in the pirate era and the battles between the pirate fleets and the various national navy's.

Once thought to be the ancestor of all bird Pokémon, some of the latest research suggests that may not be the case. Archen Ultra Sun. GF also acknowledges such things. Also the G7 Pokedex is perhaps the best for the entry flavor text

The Dewey Decimal Archeops fact has to be one of my favoirite Pokemon facts. So glad you shed more light on it!
  • Ultra Sun Pokedex entry for Archen:" Once thought to be the ancestor of all bird Pokémon, some of the latest research suggests that may not be the case." Looks like the retcon already happened!

There actually is a reason for Archen and Archeops to have an overwhelmingly male gender ratio outside of their Pharaoh elements. Prior to Galar, every Fossil Pokémon shared this trait, and I believe it was for the same reason as Starter Pokémon, that being to make these specific Pokémon more difficult to breed for more members of the species and thus give more impact to the events in which they are gifted to the player over the course of the game. Galar's fossils are gender unknown and in the Undiscovered Egg Group, making them unable to breed at all, but they have their own reasons, including but not limited to them essentially being the Frankenstein's Monster of Fossil Pokémon.

One thing to note, “Troodons” are considered a defunct name since the animal was only named after a single tooth and became a basket waste taxon.

I had always thought the "carra" in carracosta was for carapace. Never even knew about the Carrara fossil formation but that makes the double r make sense!
  • Archeops is one of my favorite Pokemon conceptually, but it's stats aren't broken enough to warrant it's horrible ability. Slaking had a similar gimmick, but done better. I think Archeops would be better off with an actually functioning ability, rather than what they gave it.
  • @emperock9969
Just wanted to point out, that the "Carra" part in Carracostas name could also have inspiration in the French word "Carrapace" wich means "shell"
  • All fossil Pokémon and other “rare” Pokémon like the starters and eevee have that 87/12 gender ratio to make it harder to breed them.
  • @VaultN95
Now, imagine if there was a water/ground fossil Pokémon that is said to be an ancestor of all humans, and we are actually a very weird branch of evolution.
  • @eddie-roo
Upper and lower are more often than not “position relative to the core of the earth” distinctions, while southern and northern are “position relative to the equator” distinctions. Lower Egypt, Lower Canada and the Netherlands (literally low lands in Dutch) are called that because of their low elevations. Baja and Alta California are exceptions to the rule, since neither one is higher than the other, they’re just mixed bags of elevations.
  • Tbf, Turtles (and crocodiles) are some of the most unchanged species in evolution. They represent a niche so refined, so they rarely (if ever) have to change. Sort of like why crabs world wide overall look the same outside of minor differences.
  • @evanpereira3555
I have an other theory for why Tirtouga is a fossil pokemon. Because it's based on a scrapped gen2 pokemon design, thus Game Freak resurects it.
  • @madhatterman01
On the upper/lower Egypt thing: When it comes to geography the words upper and lower always refer to elevation, not placement on a map. It doesn't have anything to do with people having a different understanding of cardinal directions.
  • @Jormyyy
I unironically love using Archeops. It has some good stats and a decent move pool. And it is fun to spam acrobatics with. It has such a great visual design too!
