Hi, I'm Christan Long:
I grew up 2 days walk from the nearest road at Gorge River in a remote part of South Westland. Due to our remoteness, we are known as New Zealand's most isolated family. Over the years we have been asked hundreds of questions about our lives and in this video, I answer some of them along with some questions that you guys have had on this channel. It's not just me though, I will be directing some questions towards Mum, Dad, and Robin too! If you have any more questions please comment below. I have other videos from home as well! Huge thanks to my family for being a part of this video.

In this video, Christan Long welcomes everyone to Gorge River in front of his home to answer the most asked question about his life and his family. His dad came here in 1980 and has been living here for 38 years. Someone also wants to know how many times Christan Long came here in a year. So he came home to the Gorge River once or twice a year. But lives here for 4 weeks or sometimes he stays a little longer. He likes to spend a good few months here each year. It is an amazing playground where he can do so many things like- hiking, hunting, fishing, surfing, etc...

There are so many questions about Christan Long's life and his family. How they live in a place which is so remote and how they earn money here. Basically, his dad is an artist. He paints oil on canvas. It is his main income. Also, someone wants to know how he completed his school by living here. He actually completed his study by homeschooling.

We really need to find a way to expose this channel, it's like one of the most unique perspectives on Youtube

I can’t even put my phone down cooking or in the toilet. This made me realize how we are so disconnected from humanity

From my husband Alex Douglas who was two years behind your dad Bob at medical school and at Gregory Terrace. He said to tell your dad "I have very fond memories of you and assorted friends and brothers and sisters of mutual friends. My wife Susie knew Vivienne before she passed away. It was so good to see what you have done with your lives. Our son John is a friend of your nephew. I had not been aware of your life at Gorge River. You should know that you are missed by your friends very much. The first video we watched is very inspiring. Love and best wishes to you and your family. Alexander PS You always had a great sense of humour Bob. You and Mark Landy were a great pair!
  • Christan! You are a natural at talking head videos :-) Very well done. I gave you a massive cuppa tea at Hidden Falls Hut in summer of 2010-11. You were aged about 18 with your female friend from Rosco's. Next day you disappeared into the mist, climbing up Barrington Peak in heavy Fiordland rain. I managed to walk the Hollyford-pyke circuit in 8 days solo, with assistance from Bruce Reay in his IRB 😃 Will keep following your adventures! Ray Salisbury, Nelson Tramping Club

Gosh you can see all the sandflies flying around Robin as she's talking. I have experienced extreme sandflies at the Nelson Lakes while camping and they were so crazy! Getting in our hair, our eyes, mouth! It was a short stay!

You live the best life, I would like to live like you, I'm living in a city and I hate it, you are lucky, best regards.
  • What a wonderful way to grow up and live life. Our modern lives are too complicated with people working to collect more and more material possessions building a stressful life to support it. Humans are designed to live simply and are much happier for it.
  • Hi Chris, I just bought your book, after reading an excerpt, from it, that was in the NZ Herald. Looking forward to the read! Anthony (Northland, NZ - MON 09 JAN 2023, 12.55 p.m.)
