They're waterproof. Leave notes in your jeans, put them through the wash and they'll be fine. They don't rip either.
  • At least you can tell UK notes apart easily which is more than be said for US notes.
  • @andyt8216
To be exact, this is specifically a Bank of England note and believe it or not banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland issue their own bank notes, even though Bank of England notes are valid throughout the UK.

I'm English and I didn't know half of these things about the twenty pound note, as they say you learn something new every day 👍
  • They were talking about "Visually impaired"! NOT about Blind (the braille writing are for the blind)! That means that a colour difference would be very helpful!
  • @B-A-L
How do blind Americans know which note they are using when they are the same size and how do the guide dogs know when the colour is the same?

End of next month the last of the paper notes get removed from circulation. They won't be accepted in stores but the banks will still swap them out at face value. And yeah, the paper ones used to feature slightly raised print, but the braille style dots are a new feature of the polymer notes for an added extra bit of help. For the UV light, check out the Royal Bank of Scotland notes, their UV designs are way cooler than the Bank of England ones, Mackerel and Otters with pretty UV highlights.

The British Pound (£) is the oldest currency in the World. 🇬🇧🇺🇸
  • i like these reactions to currency videos. I honestly haven't seen money from other countries.
  • Wait WHAT? - Fiji has a 7 dollar note? Um ok. By the way I think most of those polymer notes are made in Australia. I know Australia makes the actual Money for about 20 countries including Canada and Mexico.

I found it strange the first time I went to the USA that you could hand over a $100 bank note in a store/restaurant and no one would care. In the UK, if you hand over a £50 note (not that you would as they're as rare as rocking horse poo) people look at you like you're a forger. The £20 note is the largest you'll see on a regular basis. My biggest problem in the States was since of the coins didn't have the value written on numerically. It took me a while to while to find out what each was worth (pre mobile internet days).
  • The money with the queen's head on it will stay in circulation but new money will be printed with King Charles 3rd on it.
  • The irony is that an increasing number of shops in the UK don't accept cash, everything is electronic either phone app, contactless card or chip n pin. I haven't used cash for at least 5 years. Even some cities, esp London, street buskers will have card readers rather than expecting cash as a tip.
  • Two features not mentioned: #1 is that the serial number of the note is printed twice but in different orientations. #2 Also, if you managed to circumvent the “Orion constellation” feature and photocopy the note, all notes use. Colours that photocopiers cannot reproduce. All BoE notes have the copy-write symbol on them, so you know that you shouldn’t copy the notes.

It took an Aussie to think of it then get the job done. Now theres quite a few countries following us.
  • @jgmlonek
Watch out for the new notes with King Charles III from next month onwards….same design with just his portrait substituted for his mother’s!
  • Notes are different sizes. Netherlands have been doing this for decades.
