It covers more than 70% of the earths surface. The ocean is the planet's lifeblood but its being transformed by climate change. Colonies of tiny animals, corals host one in four of all marine species, but they're dying. Over half are gone already the rest facing extinction on a scale that could lead to devastating changes for the ocean, the planet, and everyone on it.
The Oceans series examines the cutting edge science and radical thinking at work in tackling the crisis facing the world’s seas. This series reflects the passion of those at the frontline of marine biology, and tells the story of the challenge now confronting us as we explore the world’s oceans.

Dr Ruth Gates' work on "super corals" is awesome. I hope it will help recover the reefs we have lost all over the world. I was very sad to hear that she passed away last month. Rest in peace Ruth - you are an inspiration to us. I have also started to do my (small) part!

Good film. I would have liked to see more of an explanation of what corals are and the effects of their disappearance. But seeing what is being done to save them is great. Hagedorn and Gates' work is commendable

It was really a valuable effort to preserve one of the most important species on the ocean, I hope their idea will come true also thanks for the Economist endeavor to introduce the scientist struggle to cope with these problems.

Respect and love for your work !

I like how nobody in the comments actually watched the video

As professional mariners we all have a duty to be stewards of the sea. In addition, to share our nautical experience and knowledge with youth. As a Fleet Officer for Sea Scouts this will make a good presentation. Thanks Economist.

Keep your amazing works, Dr. Ruth!

The Video is extraordinarily informational about how some smart people are looking to protect and ave coral, but not stop climate change, that will take all of us. I did think it was cool how they try to accelerate evolution of corals so they could handle the warming oceans.

The earth documentary videos are so much better then the U.S. government bashing videos

A crucial part of this extraordinary film was its absolutely amazing music, especially towards the end. A dramatic and yet touching melody. Incredible. If someone knows the titles of the sound tracks used in this video, could you please share them with us? Thanks!
