Why did Romania join the Axis Powers during World War 2. Self-preservation, mostly.

Fun fact: King Michael lived to be the oldest of surviving of WWII "leaders". He died just 18 months ago. [should've said 2nd oldest as a poster informed me of Bulgaria's surving tsar.]

Forget Croatia. Romania was the original European boomerang.

The Alternative title for this could have been: "How to divide a oily Romanian cake"

On December 29 the Black Sea demanded some lands from Romania.

Interesting that Romania ended up sending more troops along with Germany for operation Barbarossa than any other axis ally combined. Romania and Hungary did way more for the axis than Mussolini did.

When Hitler wanted to give Ion Antonescu serbian part of Banat (Banat is region split between Serbia and Romania) Ion Antonescu said "I would rather cut my veins than occupy one centimeter of Serbia".

Germany: I'm fighting for Lebensraum Italy: I'm fighting to restore the glory of Rome Romania: I'm fighting for my fucking life

I love how the map of Romania hanging on the wall in the background has scribble marks on it every time they lose territory
  • I guess Hitler could have used the vampires against the Soviets
  • Should have mentioned how Romania contributed the second largest number of troops of any Axis power to Operation Barbarossa. They played a notable role on the Eastern Front which is almost always overlooked.
  • 1:15 It's not that the romanians didn't want to fight the hungarians, rather they feared german intervention if they did start a war with Hungary.

I love how you manage to present complex topics in such a quick and entertaining and yet clear and surprisingly not-so-much simplified way. Plus you actually remember about the widely understood Eastern Europe, which is often treated like some mysterious land on the Moon.
  • This video is two years old and I cant believe I don’t see a comment about this line. “Britain was a continent away and to be FRANK look at how Poland had faired.” The genius and swift explanation of all three allies at that time in a single line is amazing to me. I don’t know why but it is.

Soviet Union: Takes Bessarabia Hungary: Takes Half of Transylvania Germany: This will be the last time Romania: Are you sure about that? Germany: Well yes, but actually no Bulgaria: Takes Southern Dobruja.

Romania: We ran out of Vampires Everyone else: (Looks in Romania's direction)
  • Hungary: "I want it all!" Romania: "No" Hungary: "Dad!" Germany: "Romania, don't be mean to your brother, give him some" Romania: "But he want's it all" Germany: "He can have some" Romania: "Fine, but let me keep my bit" Germany: "Good, now you two play nice while I go fight the neighbours"
