You use it every day without paying much attention to it. But in fact, an escalator has its own history to tell. Its ancestors were used for the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt. Escalators have transformed shopping - thanks to them, the stores were able to grow to many levels. They are everywhere these days, but there are still some important safety rules you need to follow for a smooth ride.

This is actually untrue. I used to work security in an office and for safety reasons, they completely shut off the power of the escalator so there's a zero chance it will turn on.

Movie characters: I'm still going to walk on it. It'll be an adventure! Regular people: I'm still going to walk on it. I don't want to go find a staircase.

There designed so that if they stop working they can safely get everyone off them. Yes there could a mechanical failure and it free spins but highly unlikely

Nobody cares if you're first. Those are very low-effort comments.

Who cares, if I need to get where I’m going and it’s stopped, I’m walking.

The Washington DC Metro subway has the most escalators in the Western hemisphere. They are in the process of replacing their very old and unreliable escalators. Sometimes an escalator is turned off and used for walking while the other one is being repaired/replaced. They say to stand on the right, walk on the left

We have to use escalators in our mall because it's the only way to get from floor to floor. When one isn't working we have to climb them because it's the only way to get from place to place.
