Can we harness the power of artificial intelligence to solve the world’s most challenging problems without creating an uncontrollable force that ultimately destroys us? ChatGPT and other new A.I. tools can now answer complex questions, write essays, and generate realistic-looking images in a matter of seconds. They can even pass a lawyer’s bar exam. Should we celebrate? Or worry? Or both? Correspondent Miles O’Brien investigates how researchers are trying to transform the world using A.I., hunting for big solutions in fields from medicine to climate change.

"Boosts to productivity" But we don't have a productivity problem we have a distribution problem and a greed problem

This has been my favorite show throughout my 43 years of life.... For every year of it. It's amazing how long Nova has been educating.
  • @mattdogg65
Love how there's no commercials just like it is on PBS

One day we will look back at this documentary and marvel at how little we knew about technology, and how quaint and simple life seemed back in ‘24.
  • This feels just like the 90's all over again. There were documentaries like this (maybe even a NOVA) that were exploring the depths of what was and could be possible with this new thing called the internet. Now here we are at the precipice of the next big leap. Its crazy how fast it all progressed.

AI is like an uninvited, fascinating, but dangerous party guest.

NOVA AND FRONTLINE ARE GREAT PROGRAMS. 👍🏻🇺🇲
  • It's good to ask questions and think of issues that will affect us in the future

We’re already productive enough to give workers a 20hr workweek and a universal basic income. The USA was almost the first country to have a 30hr workweek WAY back in 1933 with that era’s level of technology. Our tech today is way more productive. We don’t have a problem with production. We have a problem with distribution.
  • Good show. Can’t wait for part 2. I had a hysterectomy in 2018 and the surgeon used the Davinci robot to remove my cancerous fibroid and the whole female system. Trouble was that the tumor was the size of a little lemon and she used small laparoscopic incisions for the robot blades and tools. Consequently she seeded me. Since then I have been through multiple chemos and radiation treatments for 7 abdominal wall tumors. If A.I. was involved no doubt it would’ve recommended a large straight abdominal incision and I would’ve been cancer free today. I’m 69. I currently have no lymph node or organ involvement nor new tumors but the cures are making me very sick and full of pain. Thank God my medical teams are dedicated and competent. 🤒
  • We had a "boost to productivity" when we introduced the PC to businesses. The average person does more and works harder. But we sure as hell made a lot more money for corporations
  • LMAO. That one woman saying "We are going to live in a world where we don't know what's real." Sweety, we have been living in that world for a long, long time.
  • Miles O Brien! Great as always. I have been following him for the past 20+ years even when he worked at CNN. His enthusiasm for science and technology is so contagious
  • The same thing was said about the internet. Look at all the problems thats caused? We're our own worst enemy.

Thanks NOVA. There is a lot for us to think about with this new technology. I have a better appreciation for those who were afraid to turn on the new light that hanging down in the middle of the living room from the ceiling after electricity was first invented.
  • Just after you were born, a person, or people, gave you some measure of loving kindness, some amount of compassion. If not, you would not be alive now. That was your introduction to life, the implicit knowledge that loving kindness and compassionate understanding are indispensable for human life to exist. The foundation of human life, therefore, is loving kindness and compassionate understanding. As we age we are taught otherwise by damaged people. 💔 Their misdirection is rarely intentional. They are simply sick due to their own early learning experiences/trauma. Once this is understood, we can seek help to dismantle the wrong thinking that we were taught and insert, through daily practice, right thinking, and thereby right actions. The teacher that I have learned from is Thich Nhat Hahn, and the practitioners who learned from him before me. weezi-💜🙏💖🙏🤠
  • A very well made and informative documentary. Kudos to NOVA for bringing AI awareness to the masses. I've always admired Mustafa Suleyman for his accomplishments and willingness to help others through technology.
  • To: Miles O'Brien. Thank you for sharing your experience with the artificial arm. You made this real.
  • @captsorghum
I enjoyed the Peter Sellers / Dr. Strangelove moment near the end.
