As a fellow competior in the 1990s, my dad and I met Donny and his dad when he was just starting out following a rainout in a hotel parking lot. I've always admired his journey and the level of success achieved. His interviews have always been candid and educational. Having once been a competitor at Knoxville, I would think that someone just getting out of the car after victory at the Knoxville Nationals would focus on the car, the team and the event. Through the decades I've had nothing but respect for Donny, his family and what he has accomplished. This is the first time I can ever recall a political statement being made in victory lane. It's quite shocking after winning on Hard Knox Night that anyone's mind would go to politics. Regardless of what political party we support (or neither), we can all agree that unfortunately the country has changed in which we all are bombarded with hatred and aggression surrounding politics. Up until now, sprint car racing has always been an appreciated retreat from everyday life. Congratulations Donny Schatz, you've now changed that. Sadly, I went from an admirer these past 30+ years to someone being reminded that even though someone can have amazing abilities being the wheel of a race car, there are character flaws that confirm there are so many others who contribute much more in this world than just being able to drive a race car.
