I've been on a historical fiction kick as well. One Piece is so fantastic. I'm almost done with the East Blue saga. I can't wait to read both the Paying Guest and James.
  • I read an historical fiction book 10 years ago called The Great Stink by Clare Clark. It has stuck with me since then. (No pun intended.) It was about the rebuilding of the sewer system in London. I was amazed and knew nothing about how the sewer system was developed. Before 1858, the method of getting rid of waste was to pump it into the Thames river. That didn't work and became quite stinky one hot, dry summer. The book was one of my first forays into historical fiction.

Can’t wait for you to get to the jaw drop moment in Dutch House. I had to take a moment when it happened. Also the ending is weird and wonderful.
  • @MsPixieD
I'm just over halfway through listening to Tom Hanks read The Dutch House, and it's awesome. Started it June 1, was waiting till the month started to begin your bingo prompts 😊 So many BookTubers recommended Tom Lake this year. I liked it, but didn't connect with it in the way I'm responding to Dutch House. 🌷

So glad you have found your niche! Historical fiction gives you a huge PoP!! I love the ones by Ken Follett. Some of my favorite mysteries are the historical ones. I prefer the ones prior to WWI. In May, my best reads were To The Hilt by Dick Francis and Innocent In Death by Robb. Enjoy your reads!!

❤📚❤️ Loved the reviews, Shelly! I've added James and Katherine to my "want to read" list. I own The Dutch House and need to pick it up ASAP now!

You can come sit next to me at the Harry and Meghan not-a-fan table. I had no idea that Holden had a series about novels of the people in the royal circle! I read the Royal Governess and quite enjoyed it, so I'll have to check out her other books.

Science fiction is my usual go-to genre, especially time travel stories, which can have quite intricate plots.

The Paying Guests was so good! Though I listen to the audio book and was listening to the whole the stressful sequence after the Barbers come back from vacation while at the gym. Definitely the most odd context for me to be listening to that in haha. I loved the relationship and how it developed slowly in the beginning. Then the way Francis had to come to terms with who she was, the things she's done, and how all of that has played into the relationships she has with everyone. Anyways on to my list for the month, favorites have a little extra bit! * The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin * Hyperion by Dan Simmons - Really enjoyed this book there are some sections that were a bit of a drag for me but there were others that I'm still thinking about * Wild New World by Dan Flores * Gordo by Jaime Cortez - Didn't know how I felt about this in the beginning but ended up adoring it by the end * All the Dangerous Things by Stacy Willingham * Dark Force Rising by Timothy Zahn * The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson * The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters - Love love love * The Boy in the Red Dress by Kristin Lambert * Discipline is Destiny by Ryan Holiday * Golden Son by Pierce Brown - I understand why my friend has been recommending this series to me for so long now. Its just so good and I can't stop reading through the series. Already have the next book ready
  • I loove historical fiction. It is definitely my sweet spot for reading. I recently finished The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver for the first time. 5 stars for me!
  • @LaurieInTexas
I love historical fiction, and it is one of my niches too. I also love Victorian literature and I think that ties in with why I enjoy historical fiction because I like to read about the lives of people in times that are very different to now. I am a huge Anglophile so a couple of your historical fiction books are probably ones I would love.
  • @JacquelineCaron
Not sure if I've mentioned these reads before - so apologies if so! I highly recommend "Into the Wilderness" series by Sara Donati, Susan Howatch's "Cashelmara" and also "Penmarric" as well as the The Morland Dynasty series by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles. (book 1 starts during the War of the Roses time period and stretches all the way to Book 35 in 1931! book 36 is due to be released the end of this year )... Historical fiction lovers idea of heaven if you ask me!! looking forward to more videos!
  • Glad to hear you've had a great month of reading! Nothing worse than a run of average books 😅 I'm really intrigued by James. Do you think you have to have read Huckleberry Finn to understand it?
  • @depressedtv
I have James, Caste, and The Dutch House in my current stack of TBR books
  • I have always been a mystery reader, and now I am loving historical mystery books. But I am also the type that reads a variety of books. I am not the type to read to a TBR. It has to be whatever I am in the mood to read. My all time favorite author is Agatha Christie, so anything by her I love.
  • @SwaggerDolphin1
I was watching Forrest Gump at a friend's, made me think: I've never read the book.
