Since 2018, mercenaries from Russia's Wagner Group, an effective secret army of the Kremlin, have been active in Central African Republic. They protect the impoverished country's regime in exchange for valuable mineral resources and deploy a massive propaganda campaign to cover up the massacres, rapes and torture they are accused of. Taking advantage of France's loss of influence in its former colony, Russia is seen to be using Central African Republic – a country ripped apart by decades of civil war – as a testing ground in a new battle for global influence. FRANCE 24's Carol Valade and Clément Di Roma report.

  • How long did Central African republic stay under your French influence? Who blamed you? You went as far as toppling governments as you wished. You made Bokasa an Emperor to later humiliate him and chase him like a dog. Those Russians are not mercenaries. They are invited by a legitimate Government just as you are present in the Sahel region of Africa.

Russia can survive without Africa but France can't survive without Africa....As a fellow African living in Kenya, I am happy change is coming for former French colonies.
  • @36G
It's crazy seeing the conditions that France has left that country in

As an African who’s also an academician I can categorically say this that just like most African nations, Russia is very rich and blessed with any natural resources like oil and the rest of them; in fact Russia is the main oil supplier to many European countries, and so do not really need any thing from CAR. They only want more allies and supporters around the globe.

"Most people in the central Africa Republic, don't have much to eat" that says much about the French legacy!!!
  • @joymiller3333
Hoping you will also report on French colonization in Africa and continued exploitation in CAR and other African countries where there is destabilization and exploitation of other Western. As an African I say there needs to be a balance view of the situation.
  • France put central african Republic in this situation, happy to see my african brothers rechoice
  • Truth be told, the influence of the west in Africa is never favourable. It usually comes with a systematic means of exploitation. We should be able to hold our own and coordinate our affairs ourselves and not rely on outsiders to do it for us.

Happy to see people are gradually understanding the acute history of colonial Western countries.

“He Carries a Russian flag instead of a French one “ excuse you !!! And why should they have to do that ? What did France ever do for them ?😅
  • @susu-ub1ct
So interesting to hear this from a French reporter calling CAR an impoverished country. France has been impoverishing this country since it came under their control in the 1900s
  • @michaelipa5280
All country in the world see Russia as a truly genuine allies
  • Central African Republic has the right to choose its partners. How they use their resources is their business.
  • @SKforPeace
How many years, decades has France exerted influence in the Central African Republic? A very dismal one indeed. I wish the Brothers and Sisters in the Central African Republic all the best.
  • @de-sh109
Atleast Russia has a history of helping African countries attaining their endependence and then leaving Africa alone..for some 500 years history is there and speaks louder
  • imagine going to a country you helped ruin and divide, having the people there tell you they appreciate Russian support and then saying that they're wrong as if you know more than the very people who live there.
  • @ermiastesf7298
Thank you Rusia for your humanity to Africa. Russian has never slaved Africa. God bless Rusia
