There's something about this era of music. It's often simple, no crazy vocals, just backing music with easy lyrics. No sound effects or overproduction, just the basics of a song. That's all you need sometimes. Timeless music.

This song was originally recorded by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and was the B-side of their hit "Rag Doll". (In case you aren't aware of B-side meaning the flip side of a 45-rpm vinyl record).

The high voice on Silence is Golden was provided by Rick Westwood who was lead guitarist in The Tremeloes for 54 years from 1958 until 2012. He is still around and was 80 years old back in May last year.

I saw a sign at a Vietnam war protest (yeah, I'm really old) that said "Silence is golden, but sometimes it's just yellow." I've always remembered that line. Never be afraid to speak out.😊❤️✌️

Man the meaning behind the song...still hits hard.

Glad y'all share the lyrics. After hearing the song a billion times, I now know what the title means. As Amber said...keep silent because she is going to deny your claim anyway, and probably resent you for hurting her. Why hurt the one you love, even when you see her going down the wrong road? A thoughtful and melodious golden oldie. Grazzi!

Had the pleasure of seeing these guys in 2019. Lead singer (Chip Hawkes) was suffering from cancer at the time & had lost all his hair, but he just made a joke of it. Just a really great humble guy. Anyway, he was ok in the end, and he's still with us. They still sounded great, just like they did back in the day. ❤🎶🎼🇬🇧

Throughout all the social confusion, chaos and the different musical styles of the mid-to-late 60's, there were a few band who still put out some of the lovliest songs you will ever want hear. This is one of them. Just beautiful.

Gotta love the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's! By the 90's the WRETCHED AUTO TUNING began. I've been a ROCKER since 5 yrs. old when I first heard Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry etc., but I also liked those with great harmonies. This was one of my favs from 1967, and I have it in my collection. I was in 9th grade that year, and it reminds me of a crush I had on a pretty girl back then. No auto tuning in those days, but still Rockin' at 71.

This was one of my mother’s favourite songs. She would sing it to me if I was noisy 😂😂
  • @thefoss5387
For the Tremoloes' version of this song, their guitarist, Rick Westwood sang the lead.
  • AHA this band lived around the corner to my dad who could hear them rehearsing. Brian Poole was a local butcher's son who wanted to be in a band. After he went back to his shop and could be seen there.

This song brought back a lot of memories back, I gave this song to a friend of mine and told him to listen to the words very very carefully, as his girl was cheating on him I never had to say a word to him 6 weeks later he thanked me and said I now know why you told me to listen to the words, he said he was ready to put a ring in her finger but caught her on the act. I said that's what real friends are for. Song are a great way of telling someone who is being wronged that he or she needs to listen to the words. You do not need to just blurt it out.

I remember this from the 60s, and I was a little girl. It was one of my favorite songs and has always stayed with me.

One of the bands that tried to stem the tide of the British Invasion was a group from San Francisco. They were the Beau Brummels. They charted with the song Laugh,Laugh. Many thought they were actually British because of their sound.
