This video seeks to understand the meaning behind the humour presented in Macdonald's jokes, and why it does or does not hold up today.
Macdonald's version of "Weekend Update" often included references to prison rape, crack whores, and the Germans' love of Baywatch star David Hasselhoff. He would occasionally deliver a piece of news, then take out his personal compact tape recorder and leave a "note to self" relevant to what he just discussed. He commonly used Frank Stallone as a non-sequitur punchline.

Macdonald repeatedly ridiculed public figures such as Marion Barry, Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson, and O. J. Simpson. Throughout Simpson's murder trial, Macdonald constantly pilloried the former football star, often heavily implying Simpson was guilty of the brutal slaying of his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman. In the broadcast following Simpson's acquittal, Macdonald opened "Weekend Update" by saying: "Well, it is finally official: murder is legal in the state of California."

Hearing Norm do update unlocks a core memory I didn't know exists. My parents use to watch SNL when I was growing up, and this takes me right back. A warm nostalgia.

Best update ever with Norm. He actually used “fake” news then.

The genius of Norm, was his carefree delivery regardless of what he was saying. He had his material well thought out, in advance. His style is admired by many. Very unique creative Genius.

Who would have thought at the time that GI Jane was going to result in the dialogue that lead to Will Smith's infamous slap to Chris Rock, a former SNL cast member himself? Crazy days...
  • I always thought he was funny but since his death I can’t quit watching is old clips! The guy was truly a genius! ❤️

Another Canadian comic gem! You’re a legend Norm. You will be sorely missed but always remembered with a huge laugh.
  • I don't know if you guys are history buffs or not, but, uh...you can learn a lot about the 90's by watching Norm Macdonald Weekend Update videos.
  • " It used to be when someone died you'd say "Oh,that old man died." Now its "He lost his battle." Uh,what a loser that guy was.The last thing he did was lose.He was fighting a brave battle but at the end I guess he got kind of cowardly. But you gotta give it to the battle cancer..Also,and I'm sure that when you die,the cancer also dies.So that to me is not a loss but a draw."..Norm Macdonald...

Not really the same without seeing his face, because his expressions were part of his delivery. His expression could make you laugh as much as the jokes. His comedy was about truth. He said it was not a good idea, or really truthful, to make fun of someone who you completely disagreed with politically. I think he was a libertarian or at least a conservative.. He was a big fan of George W. Bush. I think he also wrote a lot of the comedy for The Norn Show. I only wish he had shared with the world that he was dying of cancer. It was a shock to a lot of people.
