ORIGINAL Star Wars Hoth Battle Scene (1980) - 16mm Film Preservation

This is the original Hoth Battle scene from The Empire Strikes Back as seen in the original release. This clip came from Puggo Strikes Back, a 16mm print of the film. It was scanned and then uploaded to archive.org by a user named Puggo. You can watch this version for yourself here: archive.org/details/ESB16mm

For those not aware, better versions of the Theatrical Releases exist and I talk about them in my video here:    • A Brief Review of all major Star Wars...

I do not own the rights to or to distribute Star Wars. That ability belongs to the Disney Corporation. This video is purely for preservation purposes. The music in this video belongs to John Williams, and therefore Disney.

There is something really nice about seeing this old film format. The colors and the grain, something about it just is comforting. We're so used to seeing everything in crystal clear quality it's gotten almost unrealistic, if that makes sense.

1:06 loving the windows 10 sounds right here

I remember watching this as a kid with my dad. We sat in theater after credits rolled speechless didn’t move at all. What a movie huh.…

The scene at 4.08 showing 3 AT-AT walkers with rebels running away from them is pure cinematic gold. One cannot quite believe you are watching something that was made well over 40 years ago and it looks as good now as it did upon first release. Back in the day this scene (and others) must have been mind blowing. Hats off to the special effects team for bringing these films to life.

Something about this makes the effects look even better
  • The effects actually look real. Like actual war footage. Quite remarkable really.

I love seeing the OT films in this format with the odd aspect ratio and the bleached-out colours - it’s like seeing the films again for the first time, also the audio tracks are so much clearer. Thanks for uploading these 👍
  • Watching the digital remastered version for the first time was amazing. But after over two decades I now realise what was also lost. There is a gritty realism preserved in this version making it look more authentic than the remasters, like old war footage especially the minatures shots. Thank you for these uploads.

Cool! Now I'm waiting for the return of Jedi 16mm preservation 👏

The music, the tension, the effects are all just epic. One of my favorite cinematic sequences.
  • Watching that brought me back to when I saw it in the theatres

4:07 I cannot stress enough just how awesome this scene with the 3 walkers dominating the battlefield was in 1980. There had literally been nothing like it before.
  • The scene where the speeders are all speeding towards the enemy still holds up 👍 practical effects and a good score can not be understated :)

4:58 Stormtroopers can't hit anything but that AT AT pilot...OMG...I love that maneuver...

I like how Luke gets a notification from his phone mid-battle!🤣🤣
  • 0:25 for me one of the greatest (of so unbelievable many) musical moments in Star Wars! Strings in the background, that build the framework for piano and marching drums, that give such a unique impression of the tension that is running through the soldiers while waiting for the attack. Wish there was a longer version of that little part

I have these film preservations and I am so glad that I found them. There was something special watching these, it brought back the feel of how it was before VHS, LD & DVD, just a simpler time!
