This girl on my school bus gave me the ride the lightning cassette and told me to listen to it. I was 14. I feel like I owe her a big thank you now that I'm 52 and still dig it.

I just realized the thing on the middle of the cover for ride the lightning was a chair I always thought it was a microphone 😅

If I was a boxer, this would be the song I would walk out to.

This song came on while I was driving in the middle of a lightning storm. I had it at full blast and let it guide me home. Best perfect musical timing ever.

One of the greatest masterpieces in music history.

Mad respect for the San Francisco 49ers for using this song to make an entrance on Super Bowl LVIII 😊

any metal song that uses a church bell is top tier by default. That opening is legendary EDIT: Yes, OK, I get it. Its not a bell, its Lars hitting an anvil with a hammer. You can stop telling me.

In early 1985 I moved from New Jersey to Colorado my freshman year. I knew nobody. I saw a kid at lunch wearing a Metallica Ride The Lightning patch on his jean jacket. I said, “Who’s that?” and he told me about this cool new band from San Francisco. So he made me tape copies of Ride The Lightning and Kill Em All. A few months later, they played a small 500 seat club in Colorado Springs at an all ages show. It was on my 15th birthday and me and that kid (Jeff) went. We became best friends and we’re still best friends to this day. And we’ve probably seen Metallica together 25 times. The band has changed dramatically over the years, but to us, they’ll still be that cool weird looking thrash band from San Francisco. Peace! Peace!
  • Lyrics: (since no one has posted them yet) Make his fight on the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside Shouting gun, on the run, through the endless grey On they fight, for their right, yes, but who's to say? For a hill, men would kill - Why? They do not know Stiffened wounds test their pride Men of five, still alive through the raging glow Gone insane from the pain that they surely know For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls Take a look to the sky just before you die It's the last time you will Blackened roar, massive roar, fills the crumbling sky Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry Stranger now are his eyes to this mystery Hears the silence so loud Crack of dawn, all is gone, except the will to be Now they see what will be, blinded eyes to see For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls

The Cliff Burton bass solo in the beginning is legendary. He had a huge influence on the Metallica sound.

My dad is a metalhead from the 70's to 90's and I am forever grateful for him and his generation for creating such wonderful music.

This and Hell's Bells by AC/DC are a perfect pair.
