In May 2020, American mercenaries and armed Venezuelan rebels attempted a shambolic coup d’etat against the Nicolas Maduro regime. Rather than a glorious victory and toppling a socialist dictator, the planned invasion ended in disaster, deaths, and two ex-Green Berets in captivity in one of that year’s spiciest geopolitical quagmires.

“Operation Gideon,” as it was dubbed by its mastermind and former special forces soldier Jordan Goudreau, drew in a bizarre cast of Trumpworld heavy hitters, the CIA, viral tweets, and a Kraft family heir and was supposed to somehow overthrow the Venezuelan government. Instead, it became an internet laughingstock. But new interviews with mercenaries who were there reveal the backstory is even more complicated than previously thought.

Wait, did I hear this right... Did the Venezuelan officials go on their national TV and announce they knew of the impending attack/attempt and even give the names of the American mercenaries, and these goons still attempted to carry out the mission?
  • “This house is in a strategic position, we can walk to the beach” what a masterplan they had
  • I like how in the Silvercorp guys training video it shows him skillfully avoiding puddles whilst firing a handgun hahah. That's clearly the sort of skills needed to overthrow a government. 'Ending tyranny with dry feet'
  • @hes_alive
This makes the attack on the Bay of Pigs look like Operation Overlord.
  • @sisu9663
The lack of self awareness of these guys playing Soldier of Fortune is both frightening and hilarious
  • @scar3xcr0
I feel like the people who organized this "coup" just watched season 2 of Jack Ryan and were like "Yeah take over Venezuela! That looked easy we could do that!"
  • Silvercorp is an example of a guy who learned enough stuff during his five to ten year stint in the military to convince himself that he can start up, equip and train an entire military.
  • What I don’t get is how the green berets thought they’d overthrow a whole government with only 60 guys while not even having the money and resources to equip and take care those 60 guys
  • Rendon seems like a guy who would play both sides to enrich himself as a villain in a 007 James Bond flick.
  • The stay calm guy was the informant. Staying calm doesn’t free you from the army being an informant does
  • @noway9081
This is why you shouldn't hire "Florida man" to organize things!
  • @Ofasia777
Remember kids, it's not a crime against humanity if you don't call it mercenary work!
  • Pot calling the kettle black, some guy who uses mercs with the approval of the State Department calling a sovereign nation a criminal enterprise.
  • @L.CROSS0
Love how Luke Denman’s brother didn’t want to admit his brother is basically a mercenary. 😂
  • @war8036
Special forces soldiers have never been able to win wars by themselves their role is actually relatively minimal in the grand scheme of things. I guess that “green Beret” training brainwashed him into a big ego🥴 big egos get crushed!
  • @Nawabid
They knew weeks before the "attempt", IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWSPAPER 🤣 🤣 THE WHOLE PLAN 😆
  • @ciro8861
"most of the time i wake up and think we will eventually succeed." he's been at this for 23 years, and he's not dead or in jail, he's clearly not a regular citizen.

I know this isn’t even remotely the point, but that is an absolutely beautiful petrol bomb throw at 3:38. As an Irishman I’ve got to respect that
  • I am from Venezuela and saw the title and knew for a fact it was going to be that coup, it's amazing how little they care about the people and more about power struggle, while all the suffering around.
