Why every bassist HAS to own a J Bass (Bass Tales Ep.15 w/Nicole Row)

There are only a few things that all bass players agree on:

Flea belongs on every Top 10 list.
Jaco only needed four strings.
And every bassist HAS to try a Jazz Bass.
Almost everything else is up for debate…well, almost.

In today’s video we catch up with LA session bassist Nicole Row to discuss her awesome bass collection, from her modded P Bass to the Jazz Bass she bought for her gig with Panic! at the Disco.

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott :)

Just have to add that Nicole is the best human! A few years ago she sat in with my young person's all-grrrl rock band. She could not have been nicer or more encouraging ❤️
  • @roberthart4160
Great line of great basses. I dig how chill and laid back you are, no ego. Props for Noble

It's so cool to see Nicole Row on Scott's channel. Such a gifted player, badass on so many levels. I too own the Marcus Miller Jazz Bass, which is 20 years old now & aged beautifully. Nice vintage yellow hue, and boy does the whole instrument resonate (must have to do with the wood becomer drier over time, while being played). I really recommend to check out Nicole's work with Panic, there are some youtube films out there of concerts with Nicole playing, amazing. Please, Nicole do more for SBL!

More videos with Nicole please. She seems so friendly and nice when she speaks and she plays so well.

Love the diversity of sounds there, thanks for sharing!
  • I just received my Overwater SDJ bass in February. LOVE this bass. Best constructed/sounding J bass I've ever owned. For me the narrow string spacing and 33" scale are prefect (I bet my hands are smaller than Nicole's!) :) Cheers!

Loved the bass tour you gave in this video! Also loved that you play w Panic (they're cool and I know another person in their tour band... pm for more). I loved your back-stories about the camping and recording sessions. I stayed at home and worked too much. Opportunities lost I guess. I am still working to be consistent on one of my 2 basses, but just for the love of the sounds it makes.

That was fun. Some nice Basses, love her playing style too.

First time I heard Geddy Lee's J-Bass clank I was sold for life. The perfect bass IMO
  • @moldygrapefruit
Amazing timing, I'm heading to a music shop tomorrow to grab a Sire V7 (a decision I made after watching this channel's demos)! Really looking forward to picking up my own J style!

Title: “Why every bassist has to own a J Bass” P Bass @ 6:20 : “I am inevitable”
  • I own one of the first fretless acoustic Breedlove basses. These were all solid wood. I love it ❤️ I put on black tape strings some time ago and it sounds and plays great
  • @M.Holland
Thats why I own two Jazzbasses. A Fender Marcus Miller Sig )sam as hers, but diffrent color) and a American Deluxe V string. Use them both the most these days. Also owning a P Bass and a five string Sting Ray. Love them all! :-)
  • Scott, thanks for this! Yeah, love the slightly grainy but well-defined tone of the Fender at 2:00. In mixing, it's nearly impossible to clarify a tubby woofy bass :)
  • @golfboy83
Love the acoustic bass love. So many seem to hate on them, but ive had a few over the years, and they just have a beautiful tone. I currently have a Michael Kelly Firefly acoustic bass, and absolutely love it.

My daughter is a big fan of Panic at the Disco...good work.
  • @offbeatbassgear
I owned a Marco Jazz Bass and I really tried to like it, but there was nothing about it that I liked, it was a well constructed bass but somehow nothing on it felt right to me, so I traded it. Ironically I picked that over the Marcus Miller Jazz, which she also played on this clip. The Marco was really well built but a Jazz Bass design I really couldn't connect with.
  • @shipsahoy1793
My top favorite basses to play are the precision bass and the jazz fretless. Beyond that, I have a lot of favorites!🥳👨🏻
  • @sebastiancardb
I'm currently playing with a Paramore tribute and at first I was a little bit overwhelmed with their tunings, but I guess this was one of the best advices from 5:20 Playing with the 5-string could mean more challenging digitations but it's worth it
  • @abacquias
Ah, Nicole featured at SBL. At last! 😍 Nicole, you groove!
