The 2002 Redskins season finale was a day of fond farewells. This largely unremarkable season will be remembered for two important things: 1) those sharp retro uni's (which we love) and 2) being the final chapter of the storied career of Redskin legend Darrell Green (whom we love even more). Completing his incredible 20-year career, Green made history with every snap played, done with unmatched grace and grit. Widely lauded as the NFL's Fastest Man with 275 starts, 300+ games played, 54 interceptions, Green's bust was no doubt completed and installed in Canton a decade prior to this, his final game. Although he played sparingly in this game (as over the whole '02 season), Green got the ceremonial start and his snappy reverse-punt return in the second quarter was a shiny little moment that brought it all back one more time. An appropriate final bow for a true legend.

On this December afternoon, there were other farewells to be had. Redskin nemesis Emmitt Smith played his final game in a Cowboy's uniform, behind an offensive line that gave him no chance to put one last hurting on the 'Skins. And finally, this would be the last Redskin game called by the great Pat Summerall, now semi-retired and calling games with Brian Baldinger following the departure of John Madden to ABC. Referred to as "royalty in the broadcast booth" by Dallas owner Jerry Jones, Summerall called both the opener and finale of the Redskins '02 season, both wins for Washington that we're grateful to have enjoyed.

The game itself was an afterthought. The Cowboys were in such chaos by this point, their head coach stated that if the Redskins couldn't beat them on this day, they might never again. It wasn't pretty, but Washington got is long-overdue win over the Cowboys to allow "Mr. Redskin" Darrell Green to go out a winner just as it should be.

Of course, on this channel it's never a true goodbye to the fleet-footed Green, whose heroics abound in our highlight videos, with plenty more to come! HTTR!

Again, apologies for the occasional glitches. Hoping YouTube can clarify why this happens when the video is processed on their end. The RetroSkins library is glitch free!

An end of an era. Grew up watching Darrell Green making huge plays for the Redskins. One of my favorite players of all time. No matter what they call themselves, they're always going to be the Washington Redskins to all of us true fans. HTTR!

I remember this game man was I sick from a stomach virus but was happy that Darrell finished his career with a win against Dallas.
  • Speaking of Darrell Green against the Cowboys, a game I’d love to see on RetroSkins: how about the 84 game at Dallas when he flipped momentum with a 2nd half interception return for a touchdown? Outside of the playoff punt return at Chicago, that was probably Green’s greatest moment

Dave Campo said during the week before this game, "If Washington doesn't beat us this week, they'll never beat the Cowboys again." The writing was on the wall. This Dallas team had checked out.

Dave Campo's only loss to Washington as a head coach. Dude went 5-11 in 2000, 2001, and 2002. A 15-33 career record, but he was 5-1 against Washington.
  • I remember watching this game on LIVE TV and hearing Pat Summerall without John Madden as his partner.....just didnt seem right. Smh

Absolutely gutted by Ian Rapoport's claim Friday that new ownership is not changing the name. I just wanted Dan Snyder's branding gone. I was willing to come back to my first love even without the beloved Redskins name. But instead Josh Harris is either oblivious to what the vast majority of fans want or just doesn't care about fan sentiment. I hope they change their mind. In the meantime I feel like I lost the only thing I had to look forward to.
  • Its still crazy that the Redskins lost 10 straight to these Dallas teams. Not the 92-95 Dallas teams that were dynasty, it was the 97-02 mediocre Cowboys they couldn’t beat until this game smh.

Any chance you have the 1991 Redskins vs Steelers? Gary Clark’s one handed catch is the best catch I’ve ever seen and I haven’t seen the highlight in years…
  • It's almost incomprehensible that Summerall is partnered with someone not Madden. I guess Summerall's contract ran a year longer than Madden.
