Providing an update Thursday on the wildfire burning near and in Jasper, Alta., Premier Danielle Smith appeared visibly shaken, as she provided remarks on the "out of control" fire engulfing the town.

“We have all seen on the news and social media the horrific pictures and videos coming out of Jasper. Homes and businesses have been lost to a wildfire that people are calling a ‘wall of flames.’ There is no denying that this is the worst nightmare for any community… Jasper we will continue to stand by you,” Smith said.

“Wind gust(s) moved that fire five kilometers in, probably less than 30 minutes with a wall of fire that was about 100m high. I think people need to picture what those wildfire folks were experiencing at that time. Any firefighter will tell you there's little to nothing you can do when you have a wall of flames coming in like that. Kudos to those folks that were the heroes that stood their ground in order to fight that fire,” said Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis.

I was due to get married in Jasper this weekend. It’s home to so many of us.

I was a Fire Crewleader for 15 years. Too bad there isnt any money in that profession and you have to fight your managers by tooth and nail for every hour of overtime. Sure don't need firefighters, until you do.
  • Canada clearly needs to put funding in forest management otherwise this will keep happening every year until we have no forests left to catch fire 😢
  • @Allan-es2hz
When the forests are allowed to be managed properly these types of situations will be greatly reduced. The disaster at Ft Mac years ago apparently did not teach those in charge much.

So sad to see all the buildings burnt down. I hope many parts of Jasper can be rebuilt and hopefully with fire resistance in mind. It’s truly such a special place and as an Edmontonian it’s always had a special place in my heart. I hope all those affected can get the help they need to get their lives back together.

Could you imagine if we funded forest management.
  • Cut the budget for nearly 4 yesrs and then decide to increase in 2024, completely idiotic. That 4 years fire smart control out the window. 4 years of recruiting and training more competent firefighters. 4 years of buying newer better equipment.

Beetle kill and a week of plus 36 Celsius and you get fires.

I’m from Hinton and did firesmart for two years. Wasn’t allowed in jasper because it was a national park……

Give back the forestry workers their budgets so they can function?

Danielle wasn't nearly this emotional when she cut funding for wildfire response and prevention at the beginning of her tenure. She's sure happy to take the spotlight and all the credit for the people actually fighting fires and helping evacuees with the anemic resources she's left them, though.
  • Smith wasn’t this emotional when she accused Jasper of over reacting 2 days ago, or when she declined Federal Aid, or when she was smiling & laughing in Coaldale yesterday. Why is it that we are only hearing from her today, when it’s too late?
  • She can be emotional about it after she STOPS budget cuts, climate denial, and policy that makes it worse

I think you did a pretty good job of showing how people living in Jasper feel
  • @Sheldon-sl9fc
What a horrible situation. I can’t imagine how hard this is for the people there. The fire hasn’t diminished your majesty you will become a new. Please let’s look to have less division between the Federal and Provincial governments. Let’s work together for the betterment of all Canadians.
  • @up-2date
It happened last year, what did you do to prevent this catastrophe? Your tears won't extinguish those fire
  • @Volcanoran3
I was on my way to work in British Columbia... But I couldn't continue because of that fire... I love Jasper. To know that it was so affected by this is horrifying.
