The Lauterbrunnen Valley is a valley in the Bernese Oberland in the Swiss Alps. The term Lauterbrunnen refers to the clear (lauter) springs and streams (fountains). As early as the 13th century, the valley was called Claro Fonte. In the 14th century, the word Luterbrunnen appeared for the first time. The Lauterbrunnen Valley inspired JRR Tolkien to create the location Rivendell in the novel The Lord of the Rings.

The villages of Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg are located in the valley floor. The village of Wengen is located on a terrace on the east side, and the villages of Mürren, Gimmelwald and Isenfluh are located on terraces on the west side.

The Weisse Lütschine flows through the valley. Because of the many waterfalls, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is also called the Valley of 72 Waterfalls. From Stechelberg (919 m above sea level) to the Jungfrau summit (4158 m above sea level) the difference in altitude is 3239 meters, although the horizontal distance is only 4630 meters. The rear part of the valley is a nature reserve and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are many tourist attractions in the area around the valley, such as the Schilthorn, the Jungfraujoch, the Lobhörner, the Männlichen, the Kleine Scheidegg with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The trough valley formed by glaciers contains numerous waterfalls, the most famous of which are the Staubbach Falls and the Trümmelbach Falls. The Mürrenbach Falls with a drop of 417 metres and the Buchenbach Falls with a drop of 380 metres are the two highest waterfalls in Switzerland. The Staubbach Falls, at 297 metres, is the highest free-falling waterfall in Switzerland. The Mattenbach Falls, a cascade waterfall at 840 metres, is the third highest waterfall in Europe, just behind the Vinnufallet and the Skorga, and the eighth highest waterfall in the world.

Due to the numerous, almost vertical rock faces, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is considered a paradise for base jumpers, who jump from the surrounding steep rock faces up to 810 meters high, such as the Mürrenfluh or the Staldenfluh. Since the 1980s, there have been numerous accidents, some with fatalities, which is why the valley has had a large presence in the media. The first death occurred in 1994 with the fall of Xaver Bongard. Since then, an average of two people per year have lost their lives in the Lauterbrunnen Valley from this extreme sport. Up to and including July 14, 2022, a total of 61 base jumpers have died. About 15% of the worldwide deaths in base jumping occurred in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
