Evander Holyfield Vs James Toney, Brutal Heavyweight Boxing Slugfest, All Fight Highlights

Published 2024-02-25
Evander Holyfield faced James Toney on 4th October, 2003 in a Heavyweight non title fight billed as "The War" The fight lived up to it's name with both boxers going toe to toe through the early rounds.

By the middle rounds Holyfield who was a clear favourite to win, started losing any effectiveness in his punches as most of his best shots
just bounced off the much smaller but strongly built Toney. It was also clear that Holyfield was not the Holyfield of old and had become much slower and sluggish, with Toney beating Holyfield to the punch on most occasions.

Toney was way to fast for Holyfield and showed great agility, and his punches seemed to be doing much more damage than most people would have expected. As Holyfield sat in his corner at the end of round 8
his trainers and cornermen told him he could either quit now or go all out for another round, as there was serious concern for Holyfield's health by Team Holyfield.

Round 9 went the same as the past few rounds with Holyfield being completely dominated by James Toney. Holyfield was staggered by a combination of Punches by Toney with Holyfield crumbling to the canvas at 1 minute 42 seconds into round 9 Holyfield staggered to his feet but his corner had seen enough and threw in the towel.

James Toney won via TKO, and sounded out a warning to any other potential Heavyweight opponents that he had arrived and was ready to face them .

Evander Holyfield looked Tired and worn out and was asked by the commentary team if this was the best time for him to retire. As History showed Holyfield kept fighting and clocked up a few wins though was just a shadow of the great warrior and champion that most boxing fans remembered.

Wow, great fight. I just love the way, James toney takes in the heavy weight punches from holyfield and returning it effectively.
  • Toney fought for 30 years at 5 different weights, World champion at 3. Record second to none.

Jim Grey was a jerk as usual, glad Toney set him straight!

Toney always looked so comfortable no matter inside or outside or on the ropes he’s still cool as ice. Holyfield has three hands. Mostly threw the middle hand tonight.

James Tooney always bitter because nobody recognized his antics as a fighter, never being a legend. When Holifield was in his prime he KOd Tyson and Buster Douglass squarely.
  • I prefer to think Evander's amazing career ended after the loss to Lewis in the rematch from the end of 1999.

Tony is my favorite black fighter. I loved his style. Wish he was still fighting

Tony got in great shape for this fight. He knew Holyfield was a beast.
  • Ya Holifield estaba ya bastante viejo para el boxeo y bastante deteriorado de tantos golpes recibidos durante su carrera, ya no era el mismo.

Tobey v Lewis would be exciting. Lewis has too much power. Would have loved to see toney v lewis and toney v rahman
  • Toney was a all.te great, middleweight up to heavyweight, a champion
  • Dang, JT was so fun to watch. Had me laughing with his antics. I love his style.
