Only 650 miles away from the North Pole, Svalbard (or Spitsbergen) is unlike any place you’ve ever seen. This archipelago halfway between Norway and the North Pole is often referred to as Europe’s last wilderness, offering Arctic nature at its rawest and most powerful. At 78 degrees North, Svalbard’s main settlement, Longyearbyen, is well within the Arctic Circle. It’s the only inhabited place you can experience northern lights during the day because it’s in complete darkness during the winter months until mid-February.

I visited Longyearbyen several years ago. Arrived by ship. I found the town interesting and the people quite friendly.

The cat ban is not because of rabies. It's because they want to protect the things that cats would hunt.

very informative . Spitsbergen is on my visiting list at top

I think the reason for the ban on cemetery. Is because of the permafrost, not the polerbears.

So many incorrect statements made in this video. I visited in October 2023. Spend some time with a local guide or speak to the locals and they will very quickly debunk and correct a lot of the “facts” tourists have researched about the area.

Do you're research lady! Its not Spitzbergen, it's Svalbard. Cats are not allowed due to birdlife, not due too rabies!

It's not that I dislike the cold, but living without a cat? Never.

It's not that you "can't die", people die there too, but can't be buried there.
  • Svalbard the biggest gun shop I have ever seen!!! It’s a beautiful place, I loved my time there.
