I read this great fanfic on Archive Of Our Own called “Too smart for your own good,” which is about Varian and Eugen being kidnapped for political reasons. In this fic, the author gave a great explanation of Varian’s psyche. The author says that Varian hides less pleasant emotions such as sadness, guilt and regret under layers of rage and sass. It’s a “perfectly healthy coping mechanism, thank you very much.”

When I started the Tangled series, I was not prepared for what a great character Varian would turn out to be. He's a complicated kid, and I love a good redemption arc. It doesn't hurt that he's voiced by Jeremy Jordan!
