Which island won for you? Sorry Curacao, but Barbados sounds pretty good. πŸ’—

As a Jamaican woman who’s now living in the U S, I can definitely say I’m so happy to see Black people moving to the Caribbean. I will be moving back to Jamaica myself once I retire. There’s nothing like living in a country where EVERYBODY LOOKS LIKE YOU.

This is a wonderful program... A lot of whites in move to the Caribbean and have been doing so for years. They have even set up their own communities and isolate themselves, while striving to restrict what locals can have access to in there own country. It is great to see people of color moving to the Caribbean. But, exciting news, Barbados is leading the way towards unification with Africa. In the next couple of years there will be direct flight to Africa from Barbados. The Caribbean also have family from Africa coming over to visit or live in the region as well. Plus the Caribbean is a collection of island. Come. Move around. Share your expertise to help improve the region

What Clarice is trying to say is that most people dont have to flock to the beaches in Jamaica because there are plenty of rivers all over the island, safe for swimming, that many communities have easy access to.

I would like to see expatriates living in the US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands and St. Marteen on your channel.
  • Jamila sold Barbados! I am sooo interested in this island. Love the hired help concept with no problem working for a Black woman. Also, she made a wonderful strong point about women in America doing everything: work, cook, clean. This is why we have stress related diseases! Heart disease, cancer and strokes.

Zoe, you had me feeling every word about how you feel looking around you and feeling free, seeing images of us on money and teachers that your children see that look like them. This is deep.

To me ( and I am from New York City but lived and worked in a number of Caribbean countries), Jamaica is like the ENTIRE Caribbean in one- and MORE. It is very diverse- the people are different (there is variety in the people- not everybody is the same), the neighborhoods can be vastly different, the landscape, terrains, natural resources, etc. are multidimensional and varied, there is A LOT to do and see, and so on. It's hard to be bored. If you earn a decent income, you'd be fine. Jamaica would do well especially for Americans, British and Canadians who live on social security/retiring/on retirement income. In terms of rent, 600-650 USD can get you a VERY nice 2-bed, 2-bathroom house or apartment in a gated, upscale, safe community. If you make USD/British Pounds, it's like you've won the lottery lol. When I say very nice apartments/houses, I mean MUCH nicer than apartments in England/NYC- the houses or apartments are more on par with the best in Florida or Georgia (strangely, houses in Florida and Georgia look similar to the houses in Jamaica). The infrastructure is very good (surprisingly). For instance, their highways and some major roads are first-world like (surprisingly, again lol). You will find poorly maintained roads in some areas/places, though. Their hospitals are advanced/close to advanced. The service in the public hospitals can be poor, however. Maybe the doctors and nurses are stressed- I don't know. Services in private hospitals are much better. They also have a decent public transportation system, and there is a variety of options when it comes to transportation. There is also a lot of shopping places, malls, theaters, restaurants, gardens and zoos, parks, clubs, falls, beaches, rivers, caves, hiking areas, rain forests, mangroves, mountains, plantations and great houses, cafes, co-working places, etc. There is also free Wi-Fi in some public places! They also have good schools (both private and public) and great universities that are ranked among the best in the world. There is also free healthcare if you are a resident. Jamaica reminds of of Florida- only smaller and not as developed (even though some areas rival the best areas in Florida). The service is VERY slow, however. They DO NOT move fast- they are never in a rush, which is annoying! The light can go in the middle of something important. Depending on where you are, they may warn you before. It usually comes back on quickly, though (for the most part). Less than 4 USD can get you a nice dinner or lunch at one of the restaurants where you go in and order (like a corner food shop/something). I'd advise people to go somewhere and stay for at least 6 months before they move there. You can rent Airbnb for 6 months.
  • Having been through the Caribbean, especially Grenada, Bahamas, Jamaica, Guyana, except for the British VI, I love Grenada, Grand Anse, Grenada, has small white, soft, silky sand and wide beach shelf, beautiful water, safe for non-swimmers Stephanie.

You all inspire me! I want to live in the Caribbean!!

The comments Jamila made about unrealistic expectations of black women doing everything really resonated with me. I felt that in my soul β€οΈπŸ€”

Unfortunate fact, the culture of carribean men is they have multiple baby mommas . I have heard thus from Jamaican and Bahamian men AND women. It is encouraged, as it's equated to male verility and strength. My driver once bragged he had 17 kids with like 12 women . You just know he an never have enough money OR TIME to support and raise this many kids in different households. SMDH! Poverty and dysfunction perpetuated! Many men in other cultures also have a reputation as cheaters, especially Italian men . All this to say they may hit on us, but they are not offering the relationship we seek unfortunately, and it's still "a man's world". So while I dream of relocating to somebody's Island, finding a good man there is slim to none!
