On Thursday morning, last-generation climate activists caused a major disturbance at Frankfurt Airport. According to the Federal Police, several people forced their way into the security area and stuck themselves to the apron. As a result of this action, flight operations were suspended for several hours. Around 140 flights had to be canceled due to the blockade. However, operations were able to resume after a few hours with all runways open.
Eight activists were arrested by the police, including seven who had entered the security area of the airport and one who got stuck on the fence. The group called on the German government to sign an international agreement to phase out oil, gas and coal globally by 2030.
Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) strongly condemned the action and described it as “dangerous, stupid and criminal”. She called for stricter penalties for such actions. Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) also expressed his criticism and emphasized that legislators must react with maximum severity. The Federal Cabinet had already passed a bill to tighten the Aviation Security Act, which provides for up to two years in prison or fines for unauthorized intrusion onto the tarmac. Up to five years' imprisonment is envisaged for the use of prohibited items.
Hesse's Minister President Boris Rhein (CDU) also criticized the action and called for harsh penalties for the activists. The airport association ADV called the protest action a “dangerous interference in air traffic” and supported the planned tightening of the law.
Similar protests also took place on Wednesday at Cologne/Bonn Airport, London Heathrow Airport and Oslo Airport. The actions affected a total of 30,000 passengers and led to several arrests.
