Brands may not be leaders on social movements, but you'd never know it if you watched their commercials. FedEx recently pledged to go Net Zero Carbon, but their pledge leaves a lot to be desired. Watch as bonafide try-hard Rollie Williams (Columbia University - Climate Science & Policy) tries to untangle the web of legalese at the heart of the FedEx climate commitment. Is it any good? You be the judge.

"Here at FedEx, we're going to replace our old vehicles and planes with new ones that will emit less CO2, because the truck and plane industries are becoming more fuel efficient anyway, and we're going to claim those improvements as our own. And if that doesn't pan out, we've given a tax-deductible donation to a bunch of eggheads who can hopefully pull a technology rabbit out of their hat at the 11th hour. So can you stop bugging us now and let us go back to what we were doing anyway?"

This channel is basically just "Shit global corporations say about the environment and why it's utter bollocks" and I'm all for it.
  • @alanthefisher
Damn, its almost like these companies are driven by profit and public perception more than a genuine care for the planet, Oh wait that's just capitalism. Great video btw
  • @eblackbrook
You forgot to mention how meaningless setting a goal for 20 years from now is. 20 years isn't in the scope of "long term planning" for a 21st century corporation, it's the unimaginable future.
  • @neatwing2285
Can you do a video on how companies are following their climate pledges made 10/20 years ago?
  • @Diptera_Larvae
“Sustainability whiplash” has now become my favourite phrase!

This is such a great channel. So glad I was in at the ground floor and I get to watch it grow

"Corporations are leading on climate change in the same way that dictators are leading on deposing themselves" Damn that was good
  • @samuelsmith9582
The emissions statement falling neatly in line with regulations reducing said emissions is very similar to the garbage my former employer liked to say to staff when they raised wages because the local minimum wage was increased. Fucking insulting.
  • @dr.zoidberg8666
The funniest joke in the whole video is that we're all gonna die but capitalist profit margins will be beautiful right up until the end.
  • "We don't do anything helpful until we're absolutely forced to. Because we're American! And then we brag about it."
  • @KarolaTea
"We knew we were doing bad but we did bad anyway" is the perfect corporate apology for climate change tho, isn't it?
  • @fireant202
I was just listening to a podcast about how there's been exactly zero fulfillment of any of the donation/money pledges made by companies in response to BLM and related issues last year. Considering how great the attention on that was plus how much easier it is to simply donate to racial justice causes and we're STILL not seeing corporations follow through I have little hope for similar climate-related pledges with a 10 year plus deadline.
  • I love seeing where your videos take me. Always a journey from “omg haha ya that’s bad” to “wait…what?” To “YOURE KIDDING ME”

As a fellow FedEx ground contracted employee, we run ZERO electric vehicles at our terminal of 300+ trucks. We (as a company) care absolutely nothing about how much fuel we use, and there is no noticeable effort made to improve truck emissions. I notice that we burn a good 10-20% of our fuel just idling, so a simple auto start-stpp system would make a huge difference, with little investment per truck. If FedEx isn't ready to force electric vehicles not their contractors, maybe consider hybrids. Yes they are more expensive, but surely the massive fuel savings over the 300k miles will make you for the price. Plus, hybrids would not necessarily require a charging infrastructure—simply getting contractors used to the idea of electric vehicles. I'm obviously not an expert here, but just some observations that might be able to make a big difference—even if it's not full-blown-sustainable.

Apparently Lemmy always dyed his hair black to avoid looking like Willie Nelson. This is important information.
  • Love how a common unit of measurement in Rollie’s vids is “Amount of women you’ve cheated on your wife with”
  • Great Video! Sadly the American has become too complacent with what is going on in the world. Its good to see you have faith in the public and actions of everyday people! But I have since lost that faith.

If only we could just actually make big companies pay their taxes
