Petting a horse is one of the very first things everyone wants to do when they get up to one. The problem is if it's done incorrectly it can be detrimental to the relationship you have with your horse. When done the right way, however, you will get your horse to relax on a whole new level and build his trust in you as a leader. I've seen people do this wrong so many times and even I myself struggle to remember to do it the right way in many of my own videos! But hopefully this video helps you to keep in mind how your horse wants you to pet him! Learning how to stroke or pet a horse is a great skill to have and will make you a better horseman!

Such a basic thing but very important, there must be many inexperienced people like me who have never really thought much of it. thank you

If only some people would listen and learn. That whole "Olympic pat" thing is disgusting, ignorant and arrogant. Many animals respond positively to stroking because of their mothers licking them, especially when they are first born - dogs, cats, rabbits, etc.

Great video. I knew not to do the Olympic Slap, and to stroke the horse instead. But I've never heard the 10x thing. It makes perfect sense. Thanks so much!

Hard scratching around the wither imitating a horse grooming is. Very beneficial. When getttinc that first hand on always shoulder and wither areas staying away from the head
  • Hi! Iā€™m a new subscriber! Love your approach to horses and the techniques you use. Sometime horse tutorials can seem overwhelming for me, but yours are simple and straightforward for someone like me whoā€™s still a beginner šŸ˜Š God has blessed you with great talent to share!

I can't stand when people pat their horses hard. I've seen people who pat horses so hard, the arena echoes with the slap sound. Stroking and scratching gently is best!

Youā€™d think it would be common sense, butā€¦ wellā€¦ Iā€™ve personally seen some people do some pretty nonsensical things to and with animals, soā€¦. šŸ¤Ø

šŸ˜‚does not like to be touched on the belly

You left out touching the nose. Not a good idea to scratch or rub the nose. Some horses are fine with that but others aren't.

You forgot to mention to never pet on the chest of a male horse, because itā€™s an erogenous zone for them.
