“It’s - OK for a carpenter.” My foot! If ever there was a multifaceted man, who is also a carpenter, he is you Sir! I consider myself a generalist. Meaning that I can muddle through a myriad of skills, none with expertise, with hardheadedness and a “never give up” attitude. You Sir, take the term generalist to a level that I can only dream of! Pray maintain speed and course.

98-2% Argon/C02 has another benefit: you can spray weld with it! Try 23 volts and 350-400 inches per minute. When it's just a hiss, you'll know you're there in the promised land of fast deposition with almost no spatter. Your welder might also be capable of pulsed spray welding as well.

Scott it is really much better to stick to the 20 % co2 mix with your mild steel. Way better results. And i suggest to weld horizontal when ever you can. Vertical mig welding can look pretty good but has often got penetration issues. A lot of people think mig welding is the easiest because it quickly looks like something nice. But try to get a welding certificate and you will find out its pretty hard. Oh and forging your material does noet only look nice but also gives the steel more strength and corrosion resistance.
