I think this was written about their guitar player who wrapped his new car around a tree “Oak tree you’re in my way”. He carried the smell of death. All the drugs.

It’s written about Gary Rossington wrecking his Torino and causing them to delay the band’s tour. They fined him $10K. Gary is one of the band’s three guitarists.

That ringing guitar tone at the beginning is well controlled guitar feedback sustain. Definitely one of their most powerful songs. Written as a warning to the band after guitarist Gary Rossington (aka "Prince Charming") wrecked his car after taking qualuudes and ended up in the hospital,forcing the band to cancel a tour. As a guitarist this song is sweet butter to my ears. Allen Collins,Gary Rossington,and Steve Gaines (who had replaced previous guitarist Ed King) where a force to be reckoned with. It's too bad this would be Steve Gaines' (died in the plane crash) only album with the band. I would've loved to have heard more from him.

This song started as a warning to guitarist Gary Rossinton, but really, it's about all of them. This band and these guys are LEGENDS. Expect profound lyrics and RIPPIN' jaw dropping guitars throughout from these guys because it's what they became famous for. Do the song SIMPLE MAN. It will speak to you, as a man, like no other song ever has or will and by the time it's over, it will be on your "personal playlist" ..............TILL THE DAY YOU DIE !! .It's a masterpiece.

Always love hearing people trying to pronounce the name for the first time lol It's "Lĕh-'nérd Skin-'nérd" For the longest time i thought he was saying, "the smell that surrounds you" not knowing it was "the smell of death surrounds you" 😳 Do, "Freebird" & "Simple Man" next but please do the studio versions before doing a live reaction
