Getting strong on a handful of exercises that you connect with, in my experience, yields the best results. Don't major in the minor. Stay focused on compounds, with good form and getting stronger. Proper nutrition and recovery . This is the most "optimal " way to train, if you are results based. Nothing magical about it, work hard, with intelligent planning. That's what worked for me and countless others over the past 30 years. Great video. God Speed.

"you've got one life to live, get jacked!!" Faz, we need this on some merch. I'll pre-order.

I resonate with the 'slow, steady progress' mentality. I more or less figured that out with pullups / chinups last year (2/3 of my pulling volume all year). Just added a rep to my sets every month or two while really refining my technique. It took me from an intermediate stale period of training into what felt like 'beginner gains' (looking back it's unreal). I did the same thing with RDLs, perhaps with even some restraint on progression. Month to month it feels slow, but over the course of the year a lot can really happen. Went from 225x8 to 275x8 for working sets and it just casually put slabs of meat on my posterior. I hope to develop similar connections with my other compounds, not on the timescale of weeks or months, but perhaps years. Barbell row is the next compound that I'm really spending time with. That long term, sustained progress is true progress. 💪

Wow. Fantastic video. It’s very refreshing to find more people who actually talk about the things that really matter, or move the needle as you say. I’ve been training 11 years now and I’ve also found that my absolute best results have come from just sticking to a few exercises per muscle and just hammering home at progressing them at all costs

Can't agree more. Patience is the name of the game. Being an intermediate lifter, I see little to no progress in my training program, perhaps add a reps or two to a certain lift. Add 1 to 5 KGS of weight here and there for the course of 12 weeks. So learning to be patience really do helps with the mindset.

Absolutely love this series because in all the tons and tons of information out there, it's really awesome that you've come on just sharing what worked for you and your takeaways from the years in the gym. Refreshing to say the least. TeamFaz 🤘🏽

Although this hasn't been your intention with this series, I'm really enjoying hearing about the history of gym culture. You've offered a fair few insights into what it was like when you were coming up and how things have evolved ( or haven't in most cases )

What detention is like when Faz is your teacher: Faz: Write out ‘medium to high rep ranges in good, consistent form’ 100 times. John: Fuck you sir, I’m gonna do lengthened partials instead!
  • I was worrying about my program only having around 6 sets per week per muscle group, glad to know that, as long as I'm progressing in weight with form being equated, the "low" volume doesn't magically negate muscle gains lol

"You 've got one life to live, get jacked, walk around huge and strong, there's nothing better in life."

The metaphor about relationships and sticking to a routine is one of the best pieces of advice about lifting. I admit that I'm constantly struggling not to get caught by the shiny object syndrome, but in the end, what really prevails is discipline, eating to support your goals, and trying to progress consistently 💪

All good wisdom Faz! Several of my buddies bought the Cybergenics "system" in the late 1980's (I was lucky that I was broke back then and just couldn't afford it.) They were all so sure they were about to get jacked from it. Needless to say it went nowhere. Then they moved on to Primrose oil and a whole bunch of other supplements they were certain were going to work. After seeing none of them work, some went for the enhanced route, most just stopped lifting completely.

Being loyal to a handful of exercises even when progress slows down has served me well over time. My bench progress is at a snails pace these days to where even 15lbs in a year feels crazy but I keep at it and get stronger on other movements in the process. One life to live, and we will indeed get jacked you are correct there's nothing more important 😆
