Indiana Jones is BACK for one last ride in the Dial of Destiny! But one question that’s been on our minds is whether Harrison Ford would have ACTUALLY survived all of Indie’s wild adventures… but more specifically whether he would survive the infamous fridge scene. You know, the one where Indiana Jones survives a literal nuclear explosion by hiding in a refrigerator?! Put on your hats and grab your whips because today it’s finally time to put the question to rest.

I always thought Indi survived the fridge because he drank from the holy grail in the 3rd movie, but this works too.
  • The one problem is that indi was in the fridge for only 11 seconds, and it looks like the impact from hitting the ground, and the explosion broke the door hinges allowing him to escape.

I've been watching this channel for a long time and by now, I know there's always a twist at the end of these episodes. I was so prepared for you to say "the nuke would be fine, but the impact of the fridge being blown that far would have broken all of his bones". Got me again, MattPat.

As fast as that fridge was crashing around, I find it hard to believe that Indy wasn't killed inside. No internal bleeding, no broken bones, no concussion. That's what I have a problem with.
  • @Ryecrash617
I always assumed that the fridge door broke open at the end and ejected Indy solving the issue of him being locked inside.
  • @Sk8rToon
My problem with the fridge has always been not the fridge shielding Indy from the nuke - but the force of him being flown & dropped & surviving that without a single broken bone or bruise.

Matpat: Indiana Jones could actually survive the nuke in the fridge! Blunt Force Trauma: Allow me to introduce myself
  • @PikaLink91
18:00 I always assumed the fridge took so much damage from both the explosion and the subsequent impact and rolling around that the door simply fell off.
  • Another thing to add to that. I vividely remember as a kid when indi was being talked to about ending up in the fridge. The general specifically mentions "dont youbknow those things are deathtraps?" Refering to the latch. So even the movie acknowledge the fridge itself as the more dangerous aspect

Indi is one of the luckiest men ever and it is definitely possible that everything that could’ve gone wrong in this scene didn’t go wrong

This video reminds me of old film theory. It was very science based and fun. I hope you start making more videos like this
  • Seeing all the math and equations reminds me of the older game theory videos, I remember watching those in middle school. It makes me miss how Ronnie animated as well, his episodes were always my favorite, may he rest in peace

My great grandfather was a nuclear physist during the Cold War and I asked him about this movie and he said that as along as the fridge was lead lined, he could have survived the initial blast. But he did say that he definitly didn't survive the fridge flying that far. Edit: He couldn't tell anyone what he did, not even his wife but odds are he did work on missles because of the areas he worked in as well as how well he was payed.

I knew that about the fridge in the movie (while watching, because I'm old enough to have heard stories of kids still dying when I was young. Poor people didn't buy new fridges if the old one still worked, so fridges like that were still around in the 70s.) But the movie made it so the impact broke the door hinges, which though less likely than radiation was still possible. My thought was that he would have broken bones & maybe internal injuries from the fridge being thrown. But that movie takes place after he & his dad drank the water from the Grail cup, so they have magical quick healing for who knows how many years? The Grail guardian lived for centuries in the cave with no food or water after 1 drink. Surely by then Indy knew that low oxygen & blast injuries were a risk, but he can only die of very old age. Thus his plot armor means he was right to risk that he might get stuck in the fridge for a bit.

Fallout made reference to this scene a few times. In Fallout New Vegas, using the Wild Wasteland perk, you could find a skeleton in a fridge with a fedora. In Fallout 4, there was a short questline about a kid who hid in a fridge when the bombs fell and was in there for 200 years and only survived because he was ghoulified and ghouls can survive off of radiation.
  • I'm pretty sure the force of that impact definitely would have smashed the latch open on the fridge. But on that note, I'm surprised they didn't address the force of the impact on Indy's body.
  • @stevenearle4105
Look at the shape of the latch hole on the door, you only see it briefly but it is much larger than the wall meaning the latch is accessible from the inside of the fridge. It was probably a safety measure for the actor but since you can briefly see it in the film it's part of the in universe design now and thus he could escape.

I'm glad that the fridge wouldn't have actually launched as far as it did in the movie, since I feel like that was the most life-threatening part. When the fridge landed in the movie, it rolled and banged around like a freaking cardboard box, which would most likely be worse than rolling after a car accident (especially since the fridge doesn't have any seat belts or airbags). There's no way he doesn't break his neck or spine rolling around in that thing.

My grandfather had an old fridge similar to this one (that didn't work) that he kept in the garage to hold various tools, screws, nails, and what not. It had a mechanical latch on the door, but on the inside was a glow in the dark button that released the latch from the inside, presumably one of the early safety measures implemented before this legislation.
