New Makeup I'm NOT Buying...and What I'll Use INSTEAD

I started asking “if I lost my job, would I regret this purchase” and suddenly makeup stopped tempting me.

I’ve also realized I have way too many products. We are so susceptible to marketing. Glad you’re doing these videos

I would like to see you do this kind of video regularly. I think it's nice to be reminded of all the products that we have already in our collections

Plus there's a life saying It's not having what you want It's wanting what you've got

My low/no buy plan is that I can replace staples that I use up (mascara, brow pencil, etc). If I want anything else, I need to get rid of two other similar things (lipstick, blush, eyeshadows, etc). Since I'm a hoarder who can't bear to throw out any makeup, I won't be buying much new! 😂 It also helps that hubby retired for good in May, so the only money coming in is his military pension, since we've decided to defer Social Security for now. Suddenly the $50 palette I'd have bought without a second thought isn't such a must-have.

How does Jen’s no-buy video make me want to buy a bunch of things?

i’m not on a no-buy but something that’s helped is not NOT buying the new thing, but waiting a while before picking it up. just because i want something doesn’t mean i need to get it right now. i can wait a few weeks/months before picking up a new blush, for example. and that allows me to see what i really still want after the time has passed for the immediate hype to die down. it’s hard to not be influenced sometimes 😅

I’m glad you are promoting a buying pause😊 I often wonder about all the waste that is created.

Sometimes I go to a store like Ulta, test what I think I just have to have ….and “Meh”, not so great. Also, like you, truly looking at my “stash” allows me to realize that another whatever it is will just end up in that drawer. At 72 years young I really still enjoy makeup, but really, how many blushes does one woman need. So now I try to use up a product before new purchases and I end up rediscovering my own products. Thanks for all of the amazing work you put into this community, Jen.❤💄

I love dipping into my existing collection! It’s part of the playful aspect of makeup for me. As adults, we don’t get to play enough!❤

I’ll put something in my basket and then put my phone down and do something else. I have stuff in baskets all over: Sephora, Ulta, Walmart etc. When I look at the basket again, prices have gone up down sold out, etc. I also have a mental breakdown of what I won’t spend above. Period. $10bucks for mascara Ten bucks is high end for me most mascaras work fine. I play with the basket and seldom buy all that was in it. 😂 But it’s a nice feeling to put it in the basket, almost as satisfying as buying. 😂 It’s nuts I know but it works for me.

this is such a great concept for a video. It's novel in that you're asking yourself to be creative and thoughtful with what you already have. It goes beyond a "dupe" video. I love the idea of challenging new releases with existing products. I appreciate that this premise of this video is to get excited about what we already have. Can we recreate desired looks without buying the new release or even just the cult classic that's way too pricey? Totally cool idea. Thanks, Jen. So many creators are luring our hard earned dollars and you're helping bring us back down to earth!!

I stand with you for a no-buy July.

I’ve never bought one high end product and I’m 52 years old. That’s saved me a lot over the years. 😊

if you are on no buy, simply pull the old stuff out of your drawers. You will be suprised what you find in complete new condition 😂, so was I when I yesterday realized i have already purchased a certain, expensive eyeshadow palette which i just wanted to buy again 😮

I try to always practice mindful consumption. I just put the things that catch my eye on a wishlist that I revisit every month or two. If I still feel a pull towards anything, I compare to what I already have in my collection. If I don't have anything similar already, I leave it on the wishlist and wait for a sale. If I have something in my collection that seems similar, I make a point of wearing it to scratch the itch. So far, the system has worked well for me.

Nice swatch party video of all the alternative. It would be interesting to repeat this kind of video from time to time.

I decluttered all my makeup today, ONLY kept 3 lip liners, 2 lipsticks and one mascara. I am also resisting the urge to buy more just to have it, this video was just timed right for me 😅
