#2 'Don't abuse the warranty.' Absolutely! I've used Zippos for 40 years, I've returned two Zippos under warranty in that time, and Zippo's customer service is the best you'll ever get. If you want it to stay that way, don't abuse the warranty.

I'd say another rule. Never get rid of your first. No matter what happens even if you have to sell you entire collection always keep your first

My favorite zippos were stolen. One was my dad's... he carried it during the Korean War and he had engraved our last name on it. I guess the rule I'd add is, hide your sentimental or valuable zippos. Mine never even left my home & yet they were stolen.

Number 10, letting the fluid evaporate, is hardly an issue for me. I know how to craft my own wicks by pulling strands from cotton oil lamp wicks, weaving said cotton strands together into a smaller wick, and then sealing the tip by tying it together with thin copper wire, so it doesn't become undone. Been doing this since 2006 with great success, these self-made wicks have been very robust and reliable for me, even resisting charring pretty well. And, more importantly, I have access to near infinite supply, making the wick charring a non-issue to me. This is the absolute strength of the classic oil Zippo, compared to other lighters: Its high degree of end user maintainability. These suckers really are built to last from father to son. Few other companies appreciate quality like this anymore. You buy a BIC, you use it until it goes dry and then you bin it. With Zippo, you just keep it going with spare parts, and it's gonna be with you decades later. While I appreciate the new butane inserts they recently introduced, there will regardless always be a place for the traditional oil insert as well, for its simple, rugged reliability.

Also change your flint before it gets to small and jams up the flint wheel.

My N°1 Never to do thing is : NEVER EVER light an insert when it is out of its case! Particularly just after you've re-filled it. It can be pretty tricky to stop it burning and you will probably burn your fingers !!!

I've got a zippo that my dad sent me while I was deployed in Afghanistan 15 years ago. It's beat to crap but I kept it. Used it until about 3 years ago. I stashed it and bought a cheap slim brushed. The one my dad sent me has sentimental value now. I always keep your first one or ones that carry value to you personally.

I bought my first zippo several months ago ,I finally got the fluid for it today . I'm really enjoying learning and hopefully doing tricks with it. Thanks man .

Dude, I didn’t know people intentionally break their Zippo once they’re no longer pleased with its “shine.” That beyond pisses me off. They’re taking advantage of a wonderful American company. Shameful. It was nice seeing you in your stream. When I have time I want to commend and like all your videos. Welcome back, my friend.

My dad (died 1963) had a Storm King brass finish, when he died I put it in the lockbox. In high school I pulled it out & used it for years. Then I went to matches & Cricket disposable in a Wind Shield plastic case and returned the Storm King to the lockbox. In about 2005 I bought a used Zippo Classic (dated 2003) also with polished brass finish, bought used because I like the look of used. Last month we closed the lockbox and I refurbished the Storm King (flint had gummed up in the tube, needed new wick) and it works a treat. I'm Two-gun Pete now! With 20 year old and 60+ year old lighters!

Like I've often said: Never underestimate the value of a good Zippo.😊

Wanted a zippo for years but was never old enough yet. Turned 18 a couple months ago and bought my first today. Just as I expected it to be. Thanks for the tips
  • @MiguelDeMarchena
i am far from been a zippo collector but during my 49 almost 50 years i have purchased 6 zippo lighters and honestly i will keep using zippo until my last day because quality and reliability is what i am always looking for
  • @seregj
I've had a different experience with people being amazed by zippos. I've been carrying a zippo since I was 14 (yeah, kinda young to be addicted to cigarettes but whatever), and at high school all of my friends were stunned by my zippo tricks :D

If you want to keep your Zippo running like new get two things. A small hobby wire brush (crown type) and cotton swabs used for gun cleaning. Use the brush to clean the crud from the spark wheel and use the swab to clean the wick. It'll light like new every time. Crud on the spark wheel is the biggest culprit in unreliable lighting (weak, cool spark.)
  • Do not light a zippo in a coat pocket. Lol yes a pinhead friend of mine did that. I wish I had a video. 20 below zero he did it and set his jacket on fire. The level of stupidity on that still has be baffled
  • I’ve only ever seen Zippo’s in movies, but I saw one in line at a Walmart a week ago, bought in on a whim, and fell in love almost immediately! Since then, I’ve purchased 4 more and my family thinks I’m obsessed lol

So I actually just unintentionally came across this video, stayed cause I was mildly amused and I’m blown away I didn’t know about the repacking thing. I’ve been carrying a zippo for 20+ years now. I lost one a few years back that was my every day carry for 8 or so years. I was bummed but oh well. Bought a replacement after a few months of not having one and the damn thing sucked. I’d have to fill it up every single day with fluid. I quit carrying it around after a few months and forgot about it. Now fast forward to today. I was looking up what fluid I should use in this windproof March I used cause I assumed my fluid must have gone bad or something and I learn the repacking and i realize the reason the lighter I loved and lost worked so well is when I first got it my little cousin was messing with it and accidentally yanked the wick out so I had to take it all apart and repack it. Wild. Thanks for the video. I’ll stick around for a bit.

I actually like buying vintage zippos/lighters in general BECAUSE they already come all worn in and nicked up so I don’t have to have that “dying inside” feeling first time I drop it or accidentally throw it in the pocket with a bunch of keys
