20 years ago today, Medal of Honor recipient Cpl. Jason Dunham succumbed to wounds he sustained when he heroically dove on an enemy grenade – sacrificing his life for his fellow Marines.

In honor of his memory, Marines and Sailors with Marine Security Force Battalion Kings Bay host the Dunham Challenge each year, a rigorous fitness event held in remembrance of Dunham and his selfless sacrifice.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Dustin Rose and 1stSgt Joseluis Mejia, two Marines who served in the same battalion as Dunham in 2004, speak on his character and his noble devotion to his Marines.

  • He was even born on the Marine Corps' birthday. A Marine from birth.
  • A man dies twice, when their spirit leaves their body, and when their name is spoken for the last time.

He did it right, saved his people while going down like a warrior and did it smart like a Marine. We all know a helmet and vest isn't enough, it is going to take a willing scarifice. He is walking the beat on the golden streets.

I served in Kings Bay from 2007-2009. I remember in 2007 a few months after I arrived there they had a barracks dedication ceremony for Jason Dunham. His family was present there. Unfortunately I was assigned to security detail in a restricted area that day. Other Marines were able to be present for it though. I had heard of Jason Dunham and what he did to save his Marines back when I was still in high school. It wasn’t until the ceremony that I learned that he was also in security forces assigned to Kings Bay from 2001-2003. Rest in peace brother, your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

  • Makes me so sad. I hope the afterlife is real, so that this hero could live again, this time fully.
