Colombia is currently dealing with a massive wave of refugees coming from Venezuela. Venezuelans are fleeing their home because of a severe economic crisis under President Nicolas Maduro. There are high inflation rates and there isn’t enough food available for people within Venezuela to even eat. Thousands of Venezuelans cross the Simon Bolivar bridge located at Cúcuta every day and Colombia doesn’t seem to be turning anyone way.

This borders episode looks at why Colombia doesn’t turn away these refugees, the shared history of the two nations and how there may be a limit to Colombia’s acceptance of incoming Venezuelans.

Vox Borders is an international documentary series by Emmy-nominated producer Johnny Harris exploring life at the edge of nations. For more, visit vox.com/borders.

I've got a Colombian friend who was born in Venezuela and he told me since they didn't have vehicles and were in poverty, they just walked across into Colombia.

As a Colombian gotta say, the comments are so heartwarming to read, but like it's no big deal the culture here is basically helping anyone you can.
  • If it were just two people, it would be called: Friendship. Between two nations, this is called: a MIRACLE.

In the 80s it was the opposite: Colombians crossing into Venezuela now they're just returning the favor.

This made me cry, but not over the crisis in Venezuela. It just moved me to tears how big the Colombian hearts must be. Los Colombianos, ¡recuperaste la fe en la humanidad!

I live in Medellín, Colombia and my family and I have helped two families who didn't know where to go, each family with three daughters (less than 10 years old) we opened our doors and let them stay in until they could afford an apartment. The gratitude expressed by them was overwhelming, it was like a miracle for them. It warms my heart knowing that there're more Colombians doing the same as us.

I am a Venezuelan, I am not in Colombia nor plan to go there, but, I wish that in the future I could repay that beautiful country for all they have done for us. They truly make me hopeful about the future of Latin America.

I live in Colombia and it's heartbreaking to see families living on the street, begging for food. It really makes you think that their situation back in Venezuela was absolutely terrible for them to come over, live on the streets and still consider Colombia a better opportunity. Whenever I can, if I'm buying food for my family or something, I always try to give them something to eat because they really need us Colombianos to have solidarity with them in these hard times.
  • Wow! Colombia is a great nation with great people. Greeting from the Philippines. God bless Colombia.
