Shading-- the transition from a dark value to a lighter value in a two-dimensional work of art--is one of the most important techniques you can master to make a painting or drawing look realistic.

In this video, professional portrait painter and fine artist Matt Philleo will show you step, by step, how he develops shading with the acrylic glazing technique.

  • Matt, the glazing technique is amazing. I really enjoy watching you paint and talk about the colors you mix and apply. Thank you so much.

Thanks Matt - would love to get art tips weekly. Can you tell the type of glaze and mediums you use. Hope you will show glazing and shading on a close up portrait for realism. Jlo
  • @ChrisEkstedt
Best tutorial on shading I've seen yet. Matt which medium do you prefer? The gloss or the matte? (ha! never mind, just found you on facebook!)

Hi Matt. Thanks for this video. It is very informative. The flickering light is probably due to the interaction between your light source and your camera's shutter speed. There are lots of strategies to fix this out there on the interwebs :)
  • Was Matt medium the only medium you used this is very helpful iv never used Matt medium in a painting this way
  • You are very talented and do beautiful work! God bless. I do admit I don't get the aluminum foil palette. I've seen painters use it & I know it's a midtone but those wrinkles & reflections would drive me crazy. I wd think it makes it harder to see the paint color.

How did you come up with the idea for a tin foil wrapped palette? I use a glass cutting board and place it in my stay wet palette with cover to save paint? It would appear the matte medium might be the secret ingredient I've been looking for subtle value changes. I am also intrigued about your choice in acrylic paint. Nova color.
  • What is causing the lighting to change so much in this video? It is so distracting!
