Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston gave a panel at Awesome Con 2023 to talk about his experiences on the show, his career, and to answer fan questions.

Christopher Eccleston played the 9th Doctor in the 2005 series, often referred to as the beginning of “New Who.” While he elected to leave after the first season, his time as the Doctor was memorable and gave us some of the best episodes of the series. He is also known for his roles in 28 Days Later, Heroes, Thor: The Dark World, Shallow Grave, Safe House, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Others, Lennon Naked, and many more.

This panel was recorded on June 17th, 2023, and moderated by Tony Kim.

  • “Rose is my Rose” I love that, nearing 20 years later, he still knows what 9 was going through. THAT is dedication.

I just love how honest he is. No filter, tells is how it is. How it should be.
  • I love how hes himself. Hes not some PR machine. He says what he feels. Its...refreshing. Also, the respect he has for writers, the unsung heroes of shows, movies AND audio.

Eccleston's Doctor doesn't get enough credit because he feels so different from the more zany antics of those after him. But he is the Doctor who doesn't know if he's fit to call himself the Doctor again, the one with the freshest memory of what he did (or thinks he did), the one who has never been so happy as the one time that he was able to save everyone. That's why The Empty Child still stands out to me, because there is no villain, only a problem. No one is trying to destroy anything, no conqueror's no depravity, just a mistake that needed fixing. The Doctor needed to remember that he doesn't destroy beings, he helps them, he saves people even if sometimes that means the destruction of those creating the problem. Eccleston reminded the Doctor who he is so that all the Doctors after him could get back to saving people and preventing cataclysms like the Time War from happening again.

23:06 - Oh my goodness, what an answer! A true class act, just being his honest unfiltered self. Nothing performative here, my respect for his integrity just went up even higher.
  • 1989 - 2005 = 16 years. 2005 - 2023 = 18 years. Doctor Who has now been back on the air longer than it was off. 8 more years and New Who will have been on as long as Classic Who.

He's such a genuinely warm and heartfelt person, I think the reason his Doctor was so succesful was because it was a mirror of who he is.

28:44 "Some of the people I've had to work with have given me nightmares..." I love his sarcastic humor. He's very no nonsense but in a genuine way.

Eccleston doesnt get enough credit for how great he was in doctor who! The man literally had the impossible task of not only playing the doctor after a 15 year hiatus but also had to win over fans both old and new to bring doctor who back to popularity and honestly not only did chris succeed in bringing doctor who back to life but it wouldn't be as popular now if it weren't for him
  • @DanielRed2
For anyone's info, the upcoming theatre job he teases at the end was announced as him playing Scrooge in A Christmas Carol on stage in London later this year!

It's a bit cutting to hear outright, but I appreciate and respect his position regarding why he came back to Doctor Who. It's easy to forget actors are people with bills to pay sometimes.

An incredibly honest Mancunian, kudos to Christopher Ecclestone to admit he couldnt do conventions because of his principles in that he felt he was ripping people off. Sir, you are not ripping us off. We admire you, you're talent and your heart. Thank you for being part of bringing our favourite show back. We will always be grateful.

The girl who said that he got her into the show and that without him it wouldn’t still be around? I completely agree one million percent, I LOVE his doctor, and his performance got me hooked ❤❤

This guy man, is the reason I love the show. We're from the same city and I did the course I did at uni because he did it. Legend.
  • @uahmed2042
GET IIINNN!!! LOVE Christopher Ecclestons' panels, he is just upfront and unfiltered - he speaks right from the heart. Love the man. Thanks for this, can't wait to hear this.
  • This may be the single best convention appearance I've ever seen anyone deliver. And I'm not even a huge DW fan. Now I want to watch his season again

I'm going to give a talk tomorrow about putting the colour back on old John Pertwee Dr Who episodes. When I did that as an experiment in 1986 I told the BBC Dr Who production office that it was possible - but it would take time and money. They said there was no point, no interest, no audience. HA! I left the BBC. When Chris brought it back I watched with my kids - and cried. Thank you so much everyone ! My father worked as a sound man on First Dr episodes. I have had a hand in working on all the 20Century Drs. It's FANTASTIC that the Dr has proved to be timeless in our 21st.
