I noticed that when I start singing/humming something and another person continues I feel SO happy.

And how many of us now have one of those songs stuck in our head 🙋‍♀️
  • I think this shows that we can be easily influenced if we are not conscious and careful of the moment.
  • In her defense, who isn't gonna sing when someone sings "mamaaaa?" Everyone loves bohemian rhapsody

I already knew that I did this but had no idea the extent of it until I took my cat to visit/ stay overnight at a friend's place. We had to share a room for a few nights and I was trying to be as quiet as possible until my friend pointed out the next day that I'd respond to whatever sound my cat made even if I was right about to fall asleep.

If I'm having a conversation with someone and they have an accent, I start mirroring their accent when I speak. I'm not trying to mimic or make fun of them, it's just a thing.

The giggle at the end 😂 I always thought that was just "theater brain" If you hear a phrase or sound, yea gotta finish it. ESPECIALLY BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY!
  • Hysterical!! I love how hard Rich is trying not to laugh. 😂
  • I do this all the time. My daughter and i use it like echo-location, so we know where each other is in the house 😂
  • I repeat small pieces of several sentences when I listen to a podcast or an audiobook. Mostly I'm wearing headphones so the rest of my family "receive" these fragments of whatever I'm listening to as I go about my business round the house dropping snippets of random content 😂😂😂 my husband looks quizzically at me sonetimes but has never commented on it 😅
  • I have a coworker where we bounce sounds off of each other all day at work. Sometimes we'll be both hooked on the same phrase. I do it with my gf too. The grey parrot Apollo especially. "Shrrrock. Cork. Cork. Shrek. Shrock. Metal. Paper. Glassk." xD
  • Funny, but I embarrassingly would do exactly the same and be quite annoyed at the same time lol ...love you guys ❤
  • THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME OF SCATMAN, NOW I'M NOT GOING TO HAVE IT OUT OF MY HEAD FOR A DAY AND A HALF.

My understanding of echolalia is that it’s either echoing something like “What’s your name?” (instead of answering) or that it’s repeating things you’ve heard earlier, like how my autistic son says train announcements out loud when we’re at home playing, but I didn’t think joining in with a song was also echolalia 🤔(happy to learn something new though 😊)
  • My partner and I do this back-and-forth. And we're long distance, so it only happens over video calls 😅 but ee send sound cues over texts to one another, we're both adhd, knowing full well that we're making that noise when we see/send it 😅

I envy your lovely supportive marriage. My spouse would never be as patient, compassionate, or supportive. You are so fortunate, and I am happy for both of you.

I often speculate that my husband and I would be very annoying to be around full time bc there is A LOT of this going on. Not 2 hours ago I was singing along in the bedroom to a stones song he started singing in the living room. Sometimes, actually, I’ll think “he should appreciate this more” bc it’s very validating to have someone join in on a song you start singing out of nowhere

I remember when my husband first found out about echolalia and now he likes to point out when I'm doing it which has been a learning experience for me too. Turns out automated voices are a big one; like the escalator ramp at our local supermarket "Caution: You are approaching the end of the conveyor, please prepare to step off the end of the conveyor" or our Google alarm in the morning. I also copy the Xbox sound when it turns off.
  • @plantyfan
I definitely do this but it's not always instantaneous. Sometimes it's just a random weird out of the blue that doesn't typically show up in my lexicon and I'll have it bounce around until I finally go look it up 🤣
  • @bonessasan
Did I react in the same (or similar) ways she did while I watched this? Yes. Yes I did. Lol!
