Camping, 4wding and exploring the Barrington Tops NSW, Australia.

Not having explored much of the Barrington tops before we decided to go for a quick overnight trip to have a look around. Also we just got our hands on a new OZtrail Nullarbor -5 sleeping bag. With temperatures predicted in the minuses I was keen to test it out.

We casually cruised up the valley towards Scone NSW, had some lunch at the Gundy Pub before heading through Moonan Flat and in to the bush. From Moonan Flat you turn on to Moonan Brook Rd then on to Barrington Tops Forrest road. We followed this road up the winding hill enjoying the pristine country views.

Once at the Dingo Gate we decided to have a Quick look at the Firs Forest before finding camp. Being still early we went for a quick look at Horse Swamp Campground. We went down Horse Swamp trail came across a heap of bog holes. With the last one within 300m from the campground being too deep we had to find another way.

We took an unmarked track found some treasures, eventually made it to Polblue Ridge Rd and on to the campground. After a quick look around we decided to push on to Polblue Campground for the night. It quickly became cold but with a feed and a big fire it was an awesome night.

The new OZtrail sleeping bag worked an absolute treat with us staying warm and toasty all night. Waking in the morning our awning was completely frozen on top and even underneath. The little bits of the swag that hang out were completely frozen as well it was amazing we stayed warm. Being so fresh we decided we’d have a casual start to the day and hung around the campfire for a little longer. When we left for the morning it was still 3 degrees at 9:30 am.

Not long after leaving camp we had some young lads flag us down. Their mate was in trouble in a bog hole and they didn’t have enough get up in the ute to sort themselves. After having a look the rig was dead. I tried a quick strap pull but failed. So we hooked up the winch to assist with the dead weight. An epic recovery got the lads to the road for rescuing by tow truck.

And we were back into it again, off looking for cool things to explore. We checked out the Firs. Had a look at Devils Hole Lookout the headed of to chase some waterfalls at Polblue Falls. Seeing the afternoon out we had one more quick lap through the Firs before heading home.

There’s a little something for everyone in the Barrington Tops, grate 4wding, awesome camping and plenty of cool things to explore. Get up there and check it out for yourself.
