Ep:305 DR CYWES APOLOGIZES: HE WAS WRONG ON STATIN THERAPY INDICATIONS

Published 2023-06-06
Dr Cywes admits he has potentially made an error in advice given on STATINS. The PROSPER TRIAL does show one statistical potential benefit to STAIN prescription, however, there are far more effective ways to deal with the medical issue. • My husband has low HGL and high triglycerides. He is NOT insulin resistant at all. He took statins for two years and ended up with chronic fatigue, joint pain, tendonitis and suddenly he was getting injured with sprained ankles, back being wrenched, sprained wrist, etc that wouldn't heal. I'm not exaggerating that he was getting injured every 6-8 weeks. He'd get hurt, take it easy for a month and a half, slowly start easing back into more rigorous exercise and wouldn't even make it a week before another tendon snapped. His testosterone and DHEA levels went into the dump and he began to suffer from chronic infections for the first time in his life. I convinced him to lay off the statin. He did consult with a doctor who said that these were known side effects. To his horror, he was told that this would never go away. "Statin damage is permanent. Where ever you are a year after stopping is where you'll be forever." He went from being an lifetime athlete and powerlifter to a fragile man. It took years for him to be able to go fully back into his active lifestyle, but there are activities that he just can't risk anymore. He was a healthy, strong man with high cholesterol. The ironic thing is that statins didn't put a dent in his cholesterol levels. Also ironically, he had a zero score on the CAS before statins. Immediately AFTER the statins, he now has heart disease. He's recently gone carnivore and is hoping that helps strengthen his connective tissue and helps stop further calcification of his arteries. So far, nothing has put a dent in the chronic fatigue. And every freaking time he goes to the doctor, they push statins on him. And that's ALL they offer him. His lab work shows chronic generalized inflammation SOMEWHERE, but nobody seems to care about that. I'm scared to death.
  • Very honest of you to flag this up. Many in your shoes wouldn’t have the guts or humility. It only serves to increase my trust in your knowledge.
  • How could I ever not 💯 trust you. Your knowledge , professionalism and now admitting a mistake only makes me more confident in you. Admitting when I’m wrong keeps me grounded and human and is a incredibly strong tool for growth. 👍
  • @ivyrajan1224
I commend and respect your action dr. Not all of us accept our wrongs!

I'm 74, a FORMER type 2 and I have eaten 100% carnivore for 105 days today. ALL --- Read that "ALL" my diabetes is GONE. Also, a laundry list of other maladies are all HISTORY. My resting heart rate has plummeted from 91 to 100 all the way down to 57 to 75. My high blood pressure is now less than 115 / 75. A1C is headed to the high 4s - 5.2 now. Sleep apnea - HISTORY. Arthritis - HISTORY, etc. If I ever die, it WON'T be for a systemic lack of drugs. I'm OFF ALL MEDS ! All this is due to my having removed just one food from my diet: carbohydrates.
  • @RichardHarlos
Respect to you, Dr. Cywes. This video epitomizes one of my favorite quotations: "When an honestly mistaken man sees the truth, one of two things happens: (1) he will either cease to be mistaken, or (2) he will cease to be honest. For he will either accept the truth or he will reject it. If he accepts it, he is no longer mistaken; if he rejects it, he is no longer honest. It is as simple as that. There cannot be such a thing as an 'honestly mistaken man' who has once seen the truth." --Fanning Yater Tant.

I saw a previous video on this topic. I was taking a Statin for years. The video shared the side affects. I thought, holy cow, that's me. I stopped a month ago. Life is good again. Wow. I never ever had any indication these side affects would hit me. I'm talkn' WOW what a relief once I stopped taking it.
  • Dr Rob, I love your philosophy on working WITH your patient. As healthcare providers, we should practice as you said. We are to review the risks, benefits, and alternatives to everything we want to prescribe, not just invasive procedures. I review RBAs and involve my patient’s parents in decision making (I work in neonatology). Like you said, this is best practice! Thank you for sharing!
  • @TheDylan6908
Good for you Dr. Cywes. Clearly not afraid to admit a mistake. I wish mainstream medicine could do that.
  • @jimmyzez4359
It's great to see that you are a man of true intellect. You are knowledgeable enough to learn and accept new medical information and make the changes that truly benefit your patients health and wellbeing. Thank you for practicing medicine without the arrogance and ego.
  • Honesty is the only right way to go. As humans we learn all the time. Being able to share knowledge is what is important, even when it changes or is corrected. Thank you for this update.
  • Quantifying what low HDL levels and high triglycerides levels are would be helpful.
  • I thought you mentioned this in your previous video. Anyway, it's important to recognize mistakes and alter proclamations when better understanding or new information is uncovered. Well done Dr. Cywes.
  • @tracy3812
Kudos to you for your outstanding integrity. So appreciated.
  • This video causes me to respect you even more than I already did. Thank you for continually learning and helping your patients. So glad to be one of them.
