Publicado 2016-03-12
Rachmaninoff's first Suite for 2 pianos composed in 1893, it was originally called "Fantaisie-Tableaux" as Rachmaninoff himself described it as "a series of musical pictures". It consists of four movements just like his second Suite.

Piano 1: Vadim Rudenko
Piano 2: Nikolai Lugansky

1: Barcarolle - 0:00
2: La nuit... L'amour... - 7:35 (The night... the love...)
3: Les Larmes - 13:53 (The Tears)
4: Pâques - 19:24 (Easter)

One of the most visceral pieces of piano music in existence. To me it was a light in the dark when I was living in a bad neighborhood years ago. My apartment was a safe spot outside reality. I had a garden in a small backyard and it rained almost every other day. Would listen to this suite almost every night eating ramen noodles or leftover charcuterie scraps from work drinking cheap wine as the smell and sound of the rain drifted in through the opened windows.

How many more incredibly stunning works will I discover? Rachmaninoff is just from another world... 1:50 is moving to tears ❤

I don't easily say this, but third mvt literally makes a feeling in my chest that my heard is melting away

The fourth movement Easter, is of real virtuosity. It is Rachmaninoff's translation of Khomiakov's poem imitating bells ringing with quasi non-harmonic overtones perfectly reproduced on the piano. So magic.

I hear beautiful tolling bells (a Russian cultural element sometimes used to communicate social events) and chirping birds in the 3rd. Being a devotee of the piano, I just marvel at the technique that Rachmaninov brought to bare in this piece. The performers explore the tonal variety, and the heightened tensions make for a beautiful experience . I defy anyone not have watery eyes after a hearing.

The last movement, such pain! Especially contrasting the purity of what was just before. It hurts, but its truth.
