Sonata 7 is a perfectly round work, full of fascinating connections between movements. However, a striking characteristic of the piece is the use of silence. In this piece, silence is not the mere absence of sound, but a structural part of the sonata, and at times even more important than sound itself. In this lockdown time, we could all benefit from pausing and listen to our inner voices, things which can be achieved only with a bit of silence.
