Negative thinking can have a profound impact on OCD symptoms. OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, is a mental health condition characterized by persistent and unwanted thoughts, urges, or images (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) aimed at reducing anxiety or preventing harm. Negative thinking can fuel these obsessions and compulsions, making them more intense and harder to control.

For instance, negative thinking patterns such as catastrophizing (assuming the worst possible outcome will happen), black-and-white thinking (seeing things as all good or all bad, with no middle ground), and perfectionism (setting unrealistic expectations for oneself) can trigger and reinforce OCD symptoms.

What thinking patterns do you catch yourself doing that make your OCD worse?
  • You’re like the nicest, most understanding, and most terrifying person as a therapist Lol, because ERP therapy is like the Monster’s Inc slogan “We scare, because we care.” 😂
  • @oj64juice
Obsessing and doubting my myself, while also experiencing little to no anxiety at times has been very confusing for me, since I normally experience A LOT of anxiety. I’ve made a lot of changes to my health that I think helped lower my anxiety overall, but it’s also caused this new found doubt about my feelings…. Oh OCD… 😅

When you said logic doesn’t work with OCD, I was like yesss it doesn’t. I have tried it with my wife for years and I know it.
  • Thank u soo much nathan because of you I'm able to overcome a lot of my ocd.. My parents didn't allow to be get therapy for ocd but then ur videos helped me alot.. Hey Nathan, thanks a lot for this amazing content. I've been living with OCD on & off for the past 7 years (the first 2 years were by far the most hellish) and I recently got back in a deep hole because of a small mushroom trip (I know, what was I thinking?). Anyhow, thank you for reminding us of what happens in the mind of someone who has OCD, it's life saving. And to everyone going through this, I can say that there is light at the end of the tunnel so hold on. I've been almost OCD free for the past 3 years (until that shroom trip which I did because I felt "cured" and much better). So there is a way out but this time I won't take it for granted ! Forgive yourselves and take care !
  • I love you Nathan ,you’re just THE BEST THERAPIST IN THE WORLD!!with your videos I’ve learn a lot about OCD. My son has been struggling suffering since he was 14 years old, now 19 . I can see his progress . He was diagnosed with esquizofrenia, reality it’s OCD . Thanks to your explanation I’ve learned so much !! God bless you!!

This is so me! But you know what people, I still live my life not just for the sake of existing but actually living and know that you can too! I still have panic attacks quite often since now I'm moving closer to a life I've always wanted to live but it's been 3 years practicing erp..yup I can't assure myself if everything will just be fine in the future if or ever will I reach my dreams or not but this day I accept this uncertainty and I encourage you to do the same. Life is so much more than anxiety, three letters can't define me. Nat has helped me so much and still is a source of light in my life. Keep believing, things will be better for us❤

Just in time I really needed this I can’t stop ruminating over an obsession
  • @zzzcocopepe
I don't know why, but whenever i hear "catastrophizing" it just calms me right down. I guess it just sinks it into my brain, that I'm freaking out. And i need to just relax or let something go. It's like saying "it's not the end of the world" but not in a jerky way.
  • @ghostgore
i swear whenever im having a setback u always upload i love u man thanks for taking the time out of ur day to even make these videos i appreciate u so much
  • @Hila304
Thank you so much for your videos, ever since i started telling my thoughts "awsome! So glad to have you here thought" i am seeing improvment. Every time my ocd tries a different strategy to make me anxious i just say "cool, you can stay as long as you want" or "maybe, maybe not" It is sooo hard but i am doing my best so thank you for helping me realize that not only do i have ocd, but i can actually do something about it and be in control of my own head
  • @jessica-fcm
Your videos are life savers God bless you forever
  • Black and white thinking and Perfectionism, you nailed it Nathan.
  • @Brady-qt3it
Hi Nathan, hope you’re well. Not sure if you’ll even see this but I really struggle with real event OCD and trying to problem solve things that are completely out of my control. Im 20 years old and when you were saying how a person with OCD can tend to make up stories and jump to conclusions, this has been one of the most negative thought patterns I’ve had for years. I know you were saying that flipping the thought around and looking at it as “who cares, maybe, maybe not” is a good tactic, but I still struggle with this. I was wondering how to properly implement this skill in my life. It’s been getting better, but I still really struggle with my OCD and reoccurring ruminations (even from a couple years ago) which I can see is kinda affecting my school and relationships. Thank you.
  • Thinking of worst case scenarioa and perfectionism are the main things that causes me to ruminate. This happens when I have an urge or a thought that something bad will happen,I will try by all means to use logic to solve the problem .However this does not help as I just end being more anxious and ruminate more.
  • @shahilagh
Trauma by ppl can really m asks things catastrophic and what leads to OCD could be dud to fear of what happened to me so it wasn’t just thinking but experience
