There’s a guy here in my city that for the last 30 years has been riding his bike all over town dressed only in trunks with his body covered in oil. He rarely talks to other people and everybody kinda collectively agreed not to bother him. He’s known as Oilman and everybody here in Curitiba, Brazil knows who he is and cherishes him as basically the top folklore figure of the city. He’s kind of a Cryptid I guess. Edit 1: as a brazilian I frickin love the Mapinguari and I love even more how you admire our weird folklore!

⭐️ “There once was an ugly barnacle he was so ugly that everyone died-The End” The Squonk Wails loudly 😭

I love how between eldritch horrors and beastly monsters for cryptids, there's cryptids like the Squonk who's just so pitifully ugly he circles around to being cute. The pug of the cryptid world.

37:55 another great example is The Questing Beast, from Arthurian legend. 'The questing beast…had in shape like a serpent's head and a body like a leopard, buttocked like a lion and footed like a hart.' Thats a Giraffe my guy.

Quick clarification on the dodo: the myth that it was eaten to extinction is just that. While the sailors that showed up on the island did eat some of them, they were described as being gamy and unpleasant, so they weren't actually eaten all that often. Instead, the sailors fished off the shores of the island for most of their food. The reason the dodo went extinct is not because it was "too dumb and slow" to get away from some dudes with clubs, but because the sailors ships had rats stowed away on them, which came onto the island with them. Dodos were a flightless bird, so they made their nests at ground level and since they had no natural predators, they had no need to protect/hide their nests. The rats that infested the island thus made short work of all the dodo nests, pillaging and consuming all their eggs. The dodos died out in a single generation, likely after the sailors had already left (without having eaten them all) because every last one of their nests were destroyed by rats. It's still the fault of the sailors for allowing the rats to get onto the island in the first place, but for once, it wasn't direct human activity that killed off a species. People didn't kill them; rats did.

I can only assume that the cryptids icebergs increased strength is due to feeding on copious amounts of Magic Spoon

THE MAKALA MIGHT BE REAL! I was freaking out when he explained this cryptid because it sounds so much like a Shoebill Stork! They stand nearly as tall as a person (so maybe an exaggeration like the Kraken/collosal squid) the outline looks almost identical to the first Makala photo, and they make a loud clacking noise with their beak! (Also definitely looks like a "troubling" bird)

I'm so happy you talked about the Squonk. It's my state's official cryptid and I love it so much.
  • @HenriettaD
My Nana was from PA and used to tell me, "Don't cry, you'll turn into a Squonk." ❤

"We are talking about shape shifters and antarctica people. I don't care that your cat can go in water" is probably the closest we'll get to hearing wendigoon say fuck
  • men, i dont know if you ever going to read this, but i had to tell you. As you probably guesed, english is my second lenguage, but when like a week ago i discovered your channel, i hoped its was my first lenguague to enjoy you more (i know that sound wierd but i dont find another way to say it). Your way of telling histories with homour and the obvious knowelegde you have because of the incredible resource that you make, really motivates me a lot, and it makes me wanna do a good job when im doing something. And also, you made me wanna read again, a hobbie that i lose over the years but now you encourage to retain it. So thanks to all of that, i dont think that any other channel will ever made me feel this way. (sorry for the probably horrific english, i promise you im doing my best).

i love the kappa, playing the Harvest Moon games growing up and having a Kappa as a secret character you can meet and he only acknowledges you if you give him cucumbers was my favourite thing lmao
  • @ampersand_e
the makalala is 100% a shoebill stork. they stand about 5 feet tall, and clatter their bills together which makes a sort of machine-gun type sound instead of vocalizing. they decapitate their prey, and they can fly! but they are remarkably docile towards humans :]

His Skinwalker apology is more genuine and more effort than like 99% of YouTuber apologies
